She Called Her Sister In Law, I Called Her My Replacement Chapter 05
The next morning, I moved in with Hailey. Then I did three things.Â
I left every Hayes family group chat, put a freeze on our joint account so Nolan couldn’t make any big withdrawals without me, and got theÂ
silver bracelet back.Â
Morgan wasn’t there when I picked it.Â
- up. The housekeeper got it from the drawer in theÂ
living room. There was a new shallow scratch.Â
across the engraving.Â
I ran my thumb over it once. Put the braceletÂ
in my pocket.Â
The first week at Hailey’s, I dug up my financial analyst license from before we got.Â
married. The edges were curled, but it was stillÂ
valid.Â
Hailey got me an interview at SummitÂ
Accounting Group here in town. They had anÂ
opening.Â
The pay wasn’t much. Enough to rent a place and feed myself.Â
I started taking on basic bookkeeping forÂ
small businesses. Sat at my desk withÂ
spreadsheets and receipts until late every night.Â
The second week, Hailey came home from work and told me something.Â
“Nolan went to that old jewelry shop inÂ
Southside. Asked if they could remake that silver bracelet.”Â
My pen stopped.Â
Hailey leaned against the doorframe,Â
watching me.Â
“The guy there said the engraving was done. by hand. He couldn’t match the depth or theÂ
timing. He said, ‘A broken thing is broken. It’s notÂ
about the silver. It’s about time you can’t getÂ
back.”Â
I didn’t answer.Â
The third week, I met with a lawyer.Â
He started putting together a property division proposal. He flipped through the bank. records I brought, and his face got serious.Â
“Mrs. Hayes, the amount spent from yourÂ
joint account on a third party over the last threeÂ
years is far beyond normal family supportÂ
obligations.”Â
“If the other party can’t prove you consentedÂ
in writing to these expenses, you have grounds toÂ
request reimbursement.”Â
I nodded.Â
He asked, “Do you want to claim emotionalÂ
damages for the baby as well?”Â
I thought about it. Then shook my head.Â
Some things you can’t put a price on.Â
Coming out of the lawyer’s office, I ran intoÂ
Nolan at the door.Â
Morgan was with him. They’d just come fromÂ
the bank next door. She was holding someÂ
paperwork.Â
Nolan saw me first.Â
His eyes landed on the property division form.Â
in my hand. He froze.Â
I turned and walked toward the bus stop.Â
That night, Hailey told me Nolan’s assistantÂ
had called my lawyer.Â
First thing he asked was, “Is she serious?”Â
The lawyer passed along my reply, “The account freeze is already in effect.”Â
Three days later, Nolan ended the lease on the Harborview Apartments.Â
Then he had the driver take all of Morgan’sÂ
things to the Hayes Family Estate.Â
When Hailey told me, her voice wasÂ
complicated.Â
“He’s trying to fix things.”Â
I was at my desk, going over a client’sÂ
statement. Didn’t look up.Â
“He’s not fixing.Â
He’s cutting his losses.”Â
A few more days passed. I got a response from the charity shop.Â
The baby items were never sold. They’d been shipped in bulk to Morgan’s cousin out of state. The address and signature were right there.Â
I pulled the shipping records.Â
One line showed that the silver bracelet hadÂ
been in that shipment too.Â
It got returned. Because the cousin’s daughter had wrists too small to wear it.Â
label.Â
I stared at the return date on the shippingÂ
That was the day before I walked into theÂ
condo and saw Morgan holding it.Â
I couldn’t sleep that night.Â
At 2 a.m., my phone lit up.Â
A message from Morgan’s cousin. With aÂ
photo.Â
In the photo, a baby a few months old wasÂ
lying in a crib. Wearing a tiny silver bracelet.Â
Not the same one. But almost identical.Â
The cousin’s message said, [Thanks for theÂ
baby gift, sis. You always remember our littleÂ
ones.]Â
I zoomed in on the photo.Â
There was a small card taped to the wrapping paper. Morgan’s handwriting: [Stay safe, little one.]Â
I put the phone down.Â
She sent someone else’s child a blessing.Â
Using what she took from mine.Â
When the sun came up, I washed my face andÂ
saved the screenshot to my evidence folder.Â
Just a reminder to myself: some people areÂ
only kind when it benefits them.
