Saved By The One I Ruined Chapter 07

I could feel the blue serum igniting in my veins. 

My eyes snapped open to a world in razor–sharp focus. The soldiers’s footsteps behind the wall, Andrew’s curses dozens of feet away, and even the dust motes drifting in the air–every detail stood out with startling clarity. 

“Amanda,” Vanessa shrieked. “Stop her.” 

I raised my arm and fired–the pulse gun struck the tablet in her hand, detonating it in a burst of flame. Amid the explosion’s glare, I scooped up Jared and bolted for the side door. 

Bullets screamed toward us, but each one sparked harmlessly against the shimmering blue force field enveloping my skin. 

Paul’s boat was waiting at the dock. As I leaped onto the deck, I caught a flash of shock in his eyes. behind his glasses. He blurted out, “Did you inject the serum?” 

“Save him, now!” I laid Jared on the bed. 

Paul’s fingers lingered on Jared’s carotid artery for three seconds before he abruptly ripped open his shirt, revealing a strange device on his left chest–a metallic disc fused into the skin, pulsing with a faint 

blue glow. 

“Memory reconstruction program activated.” He swiftly hooked up the electrodes and added, “But his heart has stopped for over four minutes.” 

“Use electric shock.” I snatched up the defibrillator. 

Paul held my hand down. “It won’t work. Unless…” 

“Unless what?” I pressed. 

He pointed at the choker around my neck. “Your bioelectricity has been altered by the serum. If you just…” 

Without waiting for him to finish, I yanked off the choker and pressed the metal plate against the device on Jared’s chest. Instantly, blinding blue light erupted, yanking my vision into a bizarre dimension. Countless memory fragments flashed before me: Jared strapped to an operating table in the lab; Jared clutching Jasmine’s lifeless body and wailing; Jared lurking outside the high walls of the Safe Zone, secretly photographing my profile while I was on duty… 

Then it froze on the scene in the church, where he threw himself in front of me and took the bullet. At that moment, I heard my own desperate voice pleading, “Don’t you dare die. You promised you’d marry me.” 

Beep… 

The heart monitor blipped back to life. Jared’s eyelashes fluttered faintly, and his chest began to rise and fall. 

Paul exhaled a breath of relief and said, “Welcome back, Mr. Lunatic.” 

My legs gave way, and I collapsed to my knees. Only then did I notice the eerie blue glow radiating from my skin. Paul handed me a syringe and explained, “It’s a suppressor. It’ll temporarily stabilize the serum’s side effects.” 

The moment the needle pierced my vein, excruciating pain made me double over. Just before blacking out, I caught Jared’s faint whisper,” How is she?” 

Then came Paul’s sigh. “She’s doing better than you. 

At least she didn’t try to take the enemy down with 

her.” 

I woke up again in the ship’s cabin. Outside, the red sunset stained everything. Jared was on a bed opposite me and was loading bullets into a magazine. His face was pale, but he was alive. 

“Morning,” he said without looking up. “My Sleeping Beauty finally woke up.” 

I grabbed a pillow and hurled it at him. Yet the sudden movement pulled at my wound, and I sucked in a sharp breath. Jared instantly slid over to my bedside, pressing his fingers to my neck. ” The serum’s side effects will last for 48 hours. Don’t make big movements.” 

“You knew that all along, didn’t you?” I fixed my gaze on the metallic device embedded in his chest.” About the chip inside me.” 

“Just guessed it.” He tugged his collar up to hide the device. “The Safe Zone loves tampering with their elite soldiers.” After a pause, he continued, But I never thought they’d use the X–series on you.” 

I asked, “What’s that?” 

“Bioweapon.” Jared’s eyes grew cold. “Didn’t Andrew tell you? The X–series serum rewires the nervous system. Eventually, it turns the host into a super soldier or a monster.” 

I remembered the blue light deflecting the bullets and asked, “What about my situation now?” 

“It’s manageable for now.” He handed me a tablet displaying a full–body scan–a glowing dot marked the chip’s location along my spine. He said, “The chip is here. You need surgery to remove it.” 

I clenched my fists. “Before that, I’m going to settle 

scores with Andrew.” 

Jared grinned, a flush of color returning to his pale face. “Now you’re talking.” 

Three days later, we slipped back to the perimeter of the Safe Zone. Paul’s hacking skills helped us bypass surveillance, while my new abilities let me detect threats within roughly 100 yards. 

I closed my eyes, focusing my senses. “Andrew is in the central command room. Vanessa is with him. They seem to be… arguing about something.” 

Jared tweaked the jammer in his hand. “All this for this little thing?” He said, waving the data chip Paul had given him. “So, what’s on it?” 

“The complete files on Project Jasmine,” I said with a cold smirk. “Including video evidence of their live human experiments on drifters.” 

As night fell, we infiltrated the Safe Zone under the cover of the celebration fireworks. On stage at the medal ceremony, Andrew stood with his chest heavy with rows of gleaming decorations. 

“We hereby commend Commander Andrew Harris for successfully eliminating terrorist Jared…“The sickly sweet voice from the broadcast turned my stomach. 

Jared gave my hand a squeeze and grinned, “Are you jealous?” 

“Shut up,” I snapped, pressing the remote. Instantly, every screen in the square switched. 

The screens now showed evidence: Andrew 

counting stockpiled serum in a secret room, signing execution orders for “low–value civilians“, then- most chillingly–he and Vanessa in the lab, laughing as they watched prisoners being torn apart by 

zombies on the surveillance footage. 

The crowd erupted. Andrew’s face twisted in panic as he shouted, “This is fake. Shut it down.” 

“Fake?” I ripped off my disguise and stepped onto the platform, my voice booming through the megaphone across the crowd. “What about this?” 

The next clip played: Vanessa adjusted the camera angles while Andrew directed extras to pose as ” massacred scientists“. It was a meticulously staged “documentary of Jared’s crimes“. 

The crowd erupted into chaos. Andrew whipped out his gun and leveled it at me. “Traitor, you’re 

colluding with a wanted criminal to endanger public. safety.” 

“You’re the real threat to public safety.” I showed them the scan of the chip in my spine. “X–107, is this your work?” 

Andrew suddenly laughed. “No, you’re a failed specimen.” He swung his gun toward the crowd and said, “The true success is-” 

Vanessa suddenly jumped onto the platform. She ripped open her collar, revealing the X–108 serial number beneath her collarbone. With a chilling. command, she shouted, “Kill them all.” 

The soldiers pivoted their weapons toward me. I activated the serum’s power, feeling a blue glow surge beneath my skin. Just as their fingers tightened on the triggers, the entire facility was plunged into darkness. 

“Surprise.” Jared’s voice echoed from all around. 

As the emergency lights flared to life, he stood before the control room’s glass partition, a sea of surveillance monitors stretching behind him. His 

lab coat billowed dramatically in the swirling air, giving him the wild appearance of a mad scientist. 

He pressed a button with deliberate calm and spoke up, “Andrew, care to guess how I survived?” 

All exits to the Safe Zone slammed shut at once. Paul’s voice echoed through the PA system.” Attention all civilians: sedative gas has been deployed in the ventilation system. Take cover immediately.” 

Vanessa lunged first. I dodged her attack and pressed the pulse gun against her spine. I said coldly, “This one is for Jasmine.” 

A burst of blue light erupted. She shrieked as she toppled off the platform, her body trembled as smoke curled from her scorched skin. 

Seizing the moment, Andrew launched a surprise attack, his knife slashing toward the nape of my neck. In a split second, Jared’s scalpel drove straight into Andrew’s wrist. 

Andrew collapsed to his knees with a howl of pain.” Y–You were supposed to be…” 

“Dead?” Jared stepped out of the shadows, his bloodstained white coat fluttering. He smirked, ” Sorry to disappoint you. My girlfriend wouldn’t let that happen.” 

He snapped his fingers. Instantly, Paul triggered the final protocol, and every screen lit up with Andrew’s crimes: embezzling supplies, human 

experimentation, data falsification, and so on… 

The crowd’s roar surged like a tidal wave. Deathly pale, Andrew suddenly yanked a nearby soldier in front of him as a shield and bolted for the 

emergency exit. 

“You think you can run?” I pulled the trigger, but he dodged the bullet in a flash. 

Jared suddenly appeared at the entrance of the passageway and delivered a brutal spinning kick, sending Andrew back onto the platform. In perfect sync, we both leveled our guns–one aimed at his head, the other at his heart. 

“Go to hell,” I said. 

The gunshot cracked. Blood blossomed across Andrew’s chest. He stared down in disbelief, then looked up to see Vanessa holding the smoking gun. The blue light in his eyes slowly faded. 

“A piece of trash.” The last words escaped her lips. as she collapsed and died. 

Andrew crawled desperately toward the exit, only to be swallowed up by the furious crowd halfway there. I turned and buried my face in Jared’s chest, suddenly overwhelmed by a bone–deep exhaustion I‘ d never known before. 

“Is it all over?” he asked softly, tracing soothing circles on my back. 

I closed my eyes, replying, “Yeah, it’s finally over.” 

In the distance, the morning sun pierced through the clouds. The Safe Zone’s flag slowly descended, heralding a new dawn. 

Jared suddenly dropped to one knee, took out a crumpled candy wrapper from his pocket, and deftly folded it into a ring. With a grin, he quipped,” Ms. Miller, how about we do this proposal right this time?” 

I pulled him up with a laugh. “Let’s get that thing out of your chest first.” 

He winked playfully. “Are you afraid I’ll back out?” 

“I was scared you’d die,” I said, biting my lip. “If you ever pretend to be dead again…” 

“What? Will you kill me?” He leaned in and said, ” Why not punish me for taking care of you for life instead?” 

I pulled this crazy, sweet–talking man into a kiss, tasting the salt of blood and tears–and, at last, the sweetness of surviving it all.
