Resign with Grace, Return with Fire Chapter 17

Resign with Grace, Return with Fire Chapter 17

“So what if you beat us in court, Fred? In the end, I’m still the winner in life. You’re furious right now, aren’t you? Well, blame yourself for not having my moves,” Lester texted.

His and Sandra’s taunting texts didn’t affect my mood. Something did feel off, though.

Lester was a total showpiece. He hadn’t even finished high school, never had any real education, and knew nothing about running a company. How could he possibly bring a dying business back to life?

With that in mind, I hired someone to look into the matter. As expected, Lester had done something underhanded.

I was about to send the evidence I’d gathered to Sandra when I suddenly remembered that we were no longer anything to each other. We were broken up, so why should her fate be my business?

Besides, even if I sent it, she wouldn’t believe me. She would think that I was jealous of Lester and that I’d faked the proof to smear him. If she wouldn’t believe me, why would I want to invite trouble?

With that thought, I shook my head and put the files back in my drawer. I decided to let Sandra and Lester fend for themselves.

Just then, my boss called, asking me to represent the company at a bid meeting. I agreed and drove to the venue.

As luck would have it, I saw two familiar figures the minute I arrived. They were none other than Sandra and

Lester.

She wore a wine-colored evening gown, while Lester wore a white suit. His hair was slicked back, and a pair of gold-rimmed glasses perched on his nose. He looked like a refined gentleman.

Red and white made the perfect contrast. They instantly drew every eye the moment they walked in.

“Look, that’s Ms. Wendell and Mr. Hale of Wendell Group, right? They really are a perfect match. They’re both capable and good-looking!”

“I heard their company was on the brink of bankruptcy, but Mr. Hale single-handedly turned it around. How did he even pull that off?”

Although Sandra’s company had taken a hit from the court case, its sudden comeback made it an industry legend. Public opinion began to turn.

Sandra spotted me and let out a contemptuous snort, asking disdainfully, “What are you doing here, Fred? Are you still stalking us? It hasn’t been that long since we last saw each other. How did you end up looking so pathetic?”

Lester smirked and fanned the flames. “Sandy, Fred is already pitiful enough for not being able to find a job. I’m guessing he only came here to look for you because he’s truly desperate. Don’t rub salt in his wounds, or he’ll feel even worse.”

Hearing that, Sandra arched a brow, looking oddly pleased. “Oh, so you followed us here to beg for my forgiveness out of desperation? Weren’t you all tough before? How are you regretting things already?

“Well, it’s too late. I won’t take you back, even if you beg me now. I won’t give you another chance, seeing as you

never cherished the ones I gave you before. Ending up like this is exactly what you deserve!”

She and Lester traded lines, looking down their noses at me. Their mockery was unending.

Seeing them act so loftily only made me feel like the entire situation was ridiculous. I cut in and said, “Stop being so full of yourself, Sandra. I’m not here for you. I’m here as my company’s representative for the bidding.”

Sandra and Lester exchanged a look. Then, they burst out laughing, their faces full of disbelief.

“You? An unemployed drifter who can’t even land a job, claiming to be representing a company? Who are you trying to fool?”
