Proposal No. 18: Still Lost to Her Childhood Sweetheart Chapter 08
That had once been my dream and my greatest temptation. But people would always eventually grow up.
“Hailey, I’m in a rush to catch a flight. We can talk about this some other time.”
I coldly pushed her aside, just as she had pushed me away countless times.
“I’m busy. We’ll talk later.”
“Don’t bother me. We can talk about it later.”
Those words had trapped me for eight years.
Now, hearing them come from my own mouth, I realized how useful those excuses were. It was just a few simple words to dismiss everything.
Hailey wasn’t prepared for me to shove her. She stumbled and hit the wall, gasping in pain.
I didn’t look at her. I coldly opened the door to leave and immediately collided with a figure-Eric.
He looked like he had gained weight, with his cheeks becoming fuller. When this was paired with the dark expression on his face, he didn’t look depressed at all, but more like someone with a manic disorder.
Hailey rushed out while holding her arm. I stepped aside and allowed her to crash into Eric’s embrace. The two of them ended up being pressed closely together.
“Let go! Daniel is leaving. I need to stop him!” Hailey yelled.
Because of the impact, a flicker of pain was evident on Eric’s face. And yet, it didn’t earn Hailey’s sympathy.
Instead, she scolded him. “I said, let go! Why must you be so annoying!”
She shoved him hard without regard for whether he fell. Her eyes were fixed only on me.
“Daniel, look! I’ve already cut ties with Eric. No matter what he does, I won’t pay attention anymore. Take me with you, okay?”
Eric forgot about any of the pain he felt when he heard this. He called out to Hailey in a weak voice, “Hailey, I feel awful. My head hurts, and my whole body is numb. I don’t know if I got hurt from that just now. It hurts so much. I think I’m dying!”
He was still playing the victim, I see.
I’d seen this act for eight years. He never seemed to tire of it, but I was truly tired of watching him. I dragged my suitcase along and walked away faster.
“Daniel, wait for me!” Hailey exclaimed from behind.
Eric quickly spoke up. “Hailey, are you abandoning our promise? Did Daniel say something about me? Don’t believe him. I just want to be by your side. I’ll die without you. If you really think I’m standing in your way, then I’ll just go die.”
Hailey tried to chase after me, but Eric held her tightly in his arms.
He let her go and made to move like he was about to jump off the building. Regardless of what was happening, Hailey couldn’t just ignore him.
She could only shout at my back, “Daniel, I’ll come find you! Wait for me, okay?”
The dramatic scene behind me continued. I could hear the two of them hugging and crying as they each aired out their grievances.
But that had nothing to do with me anymore.
By the time I reached the airport, the team from the company had already gathered.
The colleague assigned to work on this project with me was a beautiful woman named Daisy Sullivan. She was rather famous in the company and had many admirers.
I had to admit that every time I saw her, I was stunned by her beautiful looks.
Daisy was also polite. She nodded at me and led the group through security and boarding.
I let out a long sigh as I looked back at the city that was filled with my love and hate. Then, I resolutely boarded the plane.
Hailey kept calling me the entire time. She begged me to tell her where I was going so that she could come find me immediately.
I mused over it for a short while before turning off my phone and closing my eyes to rest.
Compared to feelings, my career was more important right now. It was also important to get proper rest.
“Aren’t you going to call her back?” Daisy’s slightly teasing voice sounded.
I looked at her, and she gave me an apologetic smile.
“Your image at the company has always been that of the ‘perfect boyfriend.’ I couldn’t help but comment. Sorry, I wasn’t intentionally looking at your phone. It was just the way you were holding it.”
She stuck out her tongue at me, but I simply shook my head and closed my eyes again.
