I had been with the Hettler family for a while now, and I was gradually settling into my new life.
Ever since Aiden broke character and asked his father to let him learn the ropes at Hettler Group, Mrs. Hettler treated me better than ever.
She bragged to everyone that I had successfully tamed Aiden.
It amused me because I hadn’t actually done anything to control him.
Mrs. Hettler simply patted my hand, beaming. “That’s what happens when you marry the right one. Marry the wrong kind, and see if he ever settles down.”
I’d smile demurely, but inside, I was quietly relieved.
Though I didn’t know what caused his sudden change of heart, it was a win-win situation.
Aiden wasn’t a bad person by nature; he had just been running with the wrong crowd.
I couldn’t recall the exact details of how he died young in our past life, but I vaguely remembered
rumors about a massive brawl.
Now that he was actively distancing himself from those toxic friends, he would likely dodge that fatal destiny entirely.
Still, to be on the safe side, I suggested Aiden get a full physical.
Aiden looked taken aback, but he went along without complaint.
On the way to the clinic, he kept throwing wounded glances in my direction.
When I asked him what was wrong, he clammed up.
I found it odd, but I didn’t press him.
Fortunately, his lab results came back perfectly clean.
With his major vulnerability cleared, I completely relaxed and threw myself into my own work.
I was currently employed at a trading firm.
As for Aiden, because he had wasted so many years playing around, jumping straight into corporate management meant running into walls at every turn.
One evening, seeing him slumped on the sofa staring gloomily at a stack of files, I casually asked what was wrong.
I assumed he would be guarded about company secrets, but he didn’t hesitate to layout the Hettler family’s entire financial situation to me.
Shocked by his complete lack of defenses, I used my knowledge to suggest a few strategic adjustments.
To my surprise, my ideas not only pulled Hettler Group out of their immediate slump but also
expanded their distribution channels, locking in several massive new corporate accounts.
When Aiden’s father found out, he realized my background in global trade was a perfect fit.
He tried his best to convince me to quit my job and join the family business.
I declined.
Returning to this golden era of economic growth, I wanted to build something of my own.
I expected them to be displeased, but Mrs. Hettler turned out to be incredibly progressive. “A
woman needs her own career to stand tall these days!”
Then, she leaned in closer with a gossiping glint in her eye. “Shirley, I heard your stepsister and her husband both quit their stable positions? With the Coles’ financial situation, what on earth are they
thinking?”
The Cole family was struggling.
Harrison’s father was chronically ill, his mother had zero income, and Harrison had two younger
sisters still in school. The entire family was crammed into a tiny apartment, relying solely on
Harrison to survive.
I smiled faintly but kept my thoughts to myself.
My dad had mentioned it to me before.
Supposedly, when Sadie found out Yvonne had quit her stable job at the electronics plant alongside
Harrison, she was so furious she nearly threw a stroke. She demanded to drag Yvonne back to the manager to beg for her job back.
But Yvonne somehow talked her out of it, and Sadie dropped the matter.
I stopped paying attention and focused entirely on my career.
Unfortunately, the Coles were only two blocks away from the Hettler estate. I ran into Harrison and
Yvonne from time to time.
Likely due to the drama from family day, Yvonne now wrapped herself tightly around Harrison’s arm every time she saw me, throwing smug glances my way.
Harrison would merely give me a detached look, passing by as if I were a stranger.
I didn’t let it bother me. There wasn’t really any reason for our paths to cross anymore.
Until the day I went back to visit my dad and ran into Yvonne again.
Only this time, she pulled up in a brand new car.
