My Roommate Fattened Me Up To Steal My Billionaire Fiancé Chapter 05
Fury cut through the chill in my body.
Vanessa, you really never learn. You actually had the nerve to pull such a dirty stunt and try to take
my place.
I drew a deep breath, picked up my phone without hesitation, and called Reid.
He answered after a single ring. His deep voice was brimming with barely contained excitement.
“Nora? You told me not to call before we met because you wanted to save the surprise until the last moment. Why are you calling me now? Are you already outside the restaurant?”
The expectation in his voice made my chest tighten, but I forced myself to remain calm.
“Reid, listen to me. What I’m about to tell you is important, so please stay calm and hear me out.”
Sensing how serious I was, his voice dropped at once, his instincts sharpening.
“Nora, what’s wrong? What happened?”
“The person who texted you from my account this morning wasn’t me. It was my roommate,
Vanessa.”
I got straight to the point, my voice so calm that it almost frightened me.
“She’s always known about our online relationship and that we were originally supposed to meet yesterday. After I fell asleep last night, she secretly used Messages on my Mac to send you those messages, then deliberately deleted them from my phone. It’s already eleven thirty, and she left the dorm dressed up. I’m almost certain she’s on her way to the restaurant to meet you.”
Dead silence filled the other end of the call.
Even through the phone, I could hear Reid’s breathing grow heavier with rage.
“You’re saying she used your account and planned to show up in your place?” Disgust saturated his
voice. “How could anyone be that vile and shameless?”
He was genuinely furious.
As the Whitaker heir, Reid despised being lied to or manipulated more than anything.
Vanessa thought she had already won, with no idea that she had walked straight into a minefield.
“Reid, I’m telling you the truth because you have a right to know.”
I lowered my gaze and let just enough hurt enter my voice.
Whether you meet her or how you handle this is entirely up to you.”
“Meet her? Why not?” Reid let out a humorless laugh, his voice laced with mocking amusement
and menace. “But I won’t be the one who shows up.”
“If she’s this desperate to put on a performance and marry into old money, I’ll send someone else to play along and give her the show she wants. Don’t worry, Nora. I’ll teach that arrogant woman a lesson she won’t forget. I’ll make sure she understands what it costs to try to manipulate me.”
The edge in his voice left no doubt that Reid’s methods would make Vanessa pay dearly.
But I knew this was not the time to destroy Vanessa completely. I needed her to keep gloating a little longer. The higher she climbed, the harder she would fall.
I deliberately softened my voice and spoke with feigned concern.
“Reid… don’t you think that might be going too far? We’re classmates and roommates. What she did was wrong, but try not to do too much damage. I don’t want this turning into a huge scandal.”
Hearing me “worry about my roommate” even now softened Reid’s voice immediately. His tone held a deep mix of tenderness and exasperation.
“Nora, you’re too kind. That’s why people like her keep taking advantage of you. Don’t worry. I know where to draw the line. I won’t get my own hands dirty and risk my reputation. I’m only going to let her bring this on herself.”
“She dreams of marrying into old money, doesn’t she? Then I’ll give her the perfect dream-and let her shatter it with her own hands.”
After the call ended, I stared at the dark screen of my phone as a faint smile finally touched my lips.
Vanessa, in my previous life, you destroyed my body with those pills and used a smear campaign to drive me to my death.
This time, the heir to one of D.C.’s most powerful old-money families-the man you wanted to marry more than anyone-would be the one to set your fantasy of joining the old-money elite in
motion.
