My Mother and Husband Both Chose Her Over Me Chapter 08
Outside the emergency room, the four of them sat in a row without speaking.
No one went to the nurses’ station for an update, and no one challenged the accusations they had already
made against me.
My mother was the first to speak, her eyes reddening. “That ungrateful girl.
“We only wanted to celebrate a child’s birthday.”
“We’ve spent years hiding everything to protect her feelings. Did she really have to ruin even one birthday?”
Serena covered her mouth. “This is all my fault.”
“It isn’t,” Talia said. “She did this for attention.”
“But I’m afraid she meant it this time.”
Talia scoffed. “She always makes it look serious.
“We find her every time. This was another way to force us to pay attention.”
Serena pressed a hand to her chest. “I still feel terrible.”
Adrian put an arm around her. “Don’t worry.
“Depression can’t really make someone die.”
“Noelle couldn’t accept what happened, so she made an immature choice. None of this is your fault.”
Talia moved closer. “Exactly.
“You’ve tried to make amends. If she refused to move forward, that was her choice.”
“Are you Noelle Hart’s family?”
Dr. Bennett stood before them with both hands in her coat pockets.
Adrian frowned. “Who are you?”
She dropped a psychological assessment on the table between them. “Her psychiatrist.”
At the top of the report was a stark finding: severe and imminent suicide risk.
Adrian stared at it.
“Didn’t you just say depression couldn’t kill her?” Dr. Bennett asked.
“Come with me.”
to well to her
“Where?”
“She left records in my care. As the people listed as her family, you should take them.”
Adrian hesitated and looked at my mother.
She sighed. “We might as well see them.
“Then she can’t keep using depression as though the rest of us owe her forever.”
“Right,” Talia said, standing. “Let’s see whether she keeps playing the victim after we have the records.”
Serena’s face turned pale.
