My Mother and Husband Both Chose Her Over Me Chapter 06
“Breathe slowly and come with me,” Dr. Bentiett said.
I stayed in her office until evening before Lwas stable enough to leave Outside the hospital, I called my
closest friend, Talia Brooks
I could not go home. Every trace of Adrian or my mother would send me spiraling again.
When Talia found me alone on a bench, she covered her mouth and burst into tears. “It hurts to see you like
this.
“Adrian knew everything you survived. How could he do this?”
Somehow, I ended up comforting her.
Talia kept a room ready for me in her apartment.
A soft vanilla candle filled it with my favorite scent, and a new pair of dog-shaped slippers had been unwrapped and placed beside the bed.
Fresh towels hung in the bathroom, and she had stocked toiletries, dishes, and everything else I might need.
Each detail made the room feel as though she had always expected me to seek refuge there.
“Stay as long as you want,” she said. “If you never want to go back, then live here forever.
“You never have to see those people again.”
In the end, the one person standing beside me seemed to be someone who shared no blood with me at all. Despite everything, I managed a small smile.
I was about to eat my first meal of the day when I heard Talia speaking in the next room.
“Don’t worry. I put sleeping pills in her food.
“She won’t wake up before tomorrow night.”
I stopped outside her partly open door and covered my mouth.
“Of course I’ll be there, Serena. I’m Milo’s godmother.
“I wouldn’t miss his third birthday.”
“You and Diane can relax. Nothing will go wrong tomorrow.
“I measured the medication carefully, so Noelle won’t find out about the party and have another
breakdown.”
“Okay, Bye, Diane.
Bye, Adrian. Bye, Serena.”
She ended the call and stepped into the hall with a delighted expression. Then she saw me.
“Why?” I asked.
Talia coughed awkwardly. “You heard that?”
“Why?” My voice rose as I gripped her shoulders.
“You came to Harbor City with nothing, and I gave you a place to live.”
“Why would you do this too? Why?”
