His head snapped up. “What?”
I wiped the corner of my eye. “A divorce.
“I’ll leave without asking for any property. I want it done as soon as possible.”
“No.” His brow tightened.
I gave a bitter laugh. “Don’t tell me you can’t let go of our marriage.”
“Our marriage matters,” he said. “But more importantly, Serena can’t be branded a home-wrecker.
“Raising our son without me has already been hard enough for her.”
“If I divorce you now and marry her, everyone will draw the obvious conclusion.”
I stared at him. “You really think of everything for her.”
He turned away and answered with silence.
I forced back another wave of tears. “You don’t have to agree.
“I’ll hire an attorney and file in Family Court.”
“Nell…” He reached toward me.
I entered the bedroom first and slammed the door. He stood outside for several minutes before his footsteps finally faded.
I leaned against the door and slowly slid to the floor.
That night, the nightmares returned. I was back in high school, trapped before Serena and the girls who used to follow her.
Their faces twisted until they looked more like monsters than people.
Their laughter rose sharp and shrill. The louder I cried, the more vicious they sounded.
I screamed in my sleep but could not open my eyes. The door handle rattled, then the door burst inward.
Someone wrapped both arms around me. Adrian’s familiar voice repeated the words he had used through countless nightmares.
“You’re safe. It’s over.
“I’m here.”
Then his voice changed. “Nell, it was years ago.
“She knows she was wrong.”
My eyes flew open. The sheets were soaked with cold sweat, and the clock ticked in the darkness.
No one lay beside me. The bedroom door was still locked exactly as I had left it.
No one had come.
