My Husband Told Me To Go West And The Comments Said Don’t Chapter 03

There was a pause on the other end.

“No one.”

My blood ran cold.

I let out a bitter laugh. “Then I’ll head straight to the hospital.”

“Good. Hurry. That kid can’t wait.”

I hadn’t expected it. Evan Roth would go this far for his first love’s child.

I hung up and drove Leo straight to the hospital.

Just like the comments said—any later, and he wouldn’t have made it.

I watched Leo sleep in his hospital bed, stable but still unconscious. Then I pulled up the photo of Evan’s first love’s son.

No wonder Evan had the nerve to lie.

Two boys, born on the same day. Same height. Same build. Same face, almost.

With head trauma and blood everywhere, they’d be easy to mix up.

If I’d gone to West Ridge…

Would I have pulled out someone else’s son and thought he was mine?

I gripped the photo in my hand.

Thank God. This time, I trusted the comments.

I was sitting outside Leo’s room when my phone buzzed violently. It was Captain Hayes.

“Something happened. Get back here.”

“What?”

“Don’t ask. Just get here fast. And…”

He paused.

“Brace yourself.”

I left Leo with a nurse and drove back to the site, my mind spinning.

The second I stepped out of the truck, I saw him.

Evan Roth. His leg wrapped in bandages. Kneeling in front of a body, sobbing.

The child couldn’t have been more than four or five. A shroud covered his head. He lay perfectly still.

“Leo! How could this be you?! Didn’t your mother go to save you?! Why?! Why?!”

I froze, staring.

Captain Hayes and the other rescuers turned to look at me. Their eyes were heavy with pity—the kind you don’t know how to say out loud.

“Luna…” Captain Hayes’s voice was strained. “You used to be so careful. How did you get the road wrong?”

“Luna!”

Evan spotted me.

Ignoring his injured leg, he lunged like a madman.

“Why?! I told you East Ridge! East Ridge! Why did you turn to West Ridge?!”

“Whose son did you save?! Tell me!!”

His leg gave out before he could reach me. He crashed to the ground.

A figure darted forward—gasping, grabbing his arm, steadying him.

The woman looked up and frowned at me.

“Ms. Clarke? As a rescue team member, is this how you treat your own child?”

[Here she comes! The first love finally shows up!]

First love?

I stared at Serena White in disbelief.

Wait—wasn’t she the one I’d pulled out of that fire a few months ago? Evan’s executive assistant?

Evan had brought Serena into his life right under my nose?

“Luna!”

Evan’s hand shot out and grabbed my throat.

“How did you know someone was on West Ridge?! What’s your relationship with that kid?!”

“You knew our son was on East Ridge, and you still went to save that bastard!”

Captain Hayes shoved us apart.

I clutched my neck, coughing.

“You told me West Ridge!”

“Bullshit!”

Evan’s eyes were bloodshot, wild.

“I never said our son was on West Ridge! I flipped the car with him—how could I not know where he was?!”

“Did you even look at our son’s body?!”

His hand trembled as he pointed at the shrouded corpse.

“I can’t even lift the cloth to see his face.”

“When they pulled him out, the blood had already dried on his skin.”

“Do you have any idea what he went through?!”

“Before he died, I told him—‘Dad will bring Mom soon.’ Tell me, Luna—do you think Leo was still calling your name when he died?!”

His voice cracked raw. Every word tore through the air.

As a father with a broken leg, the grief was devastating.

The press turned their cameras on him.

The volunteers who’d come to help all furrowed their brows and looked at me.

I opened my mouth, desperate.

“I didn’t! I went exactly where he told me to go!”
