“What the hell are you doing?”
Adrian threw his phone aside and lunged forward,kicking the men back one by one.
He tore off his jacket and wrapped it around my lower body,his voice shaking beyond control.
Several of the men tried to explain, but the second they opened their mouths, they met the murderous look in Adrian’s eyes.
“I’ll deal with you later.”
Adrian tried to lift me into his arms,but the moment his hand touched my waist,his palm came away covered in blood.
Only then did he realize my injuries were far worse than he had imagined.
“Call an ambulance! What are you standing there for? Call an ambulance now!”
Through the haze, I felt mnyself being lifted.
“Who is the patient’s family member?”
“I am! I’m her husband!”
“The pregnant patient suffered blunt force trauma to the abdomen. She has a placental abruption and severe hemorrhaging. We’ll do everything we can to save the baby.”
“What did you say? Pregnant?”
Through my blurred vision, I saw Adrian standing beside me like a statue.
His mouth opened again and again,but not a single word came out.
Just before I lost consciousness, a tear fell onto my face.
“So when you asked me why you was taking those clothes,you were trying to tell me they were for our baby,weren’t you?”
I wanted to tell him it did not matter anymore.
But no sound would come from my throat.
When I opened my eyes again, the only sound in the hospital room was the steady beeping of the monitor.
The ceiling above me swayed for a long timne before it finally came into focus.
I moved my fingers, and an empty, dragging ache
spread through my lower abdomen.
Adrian was sitting in the chair beside my bed.
His whole body was hunched over, both hands buried in his hair.
When he heard me stir, he jerked his head up. His eyes were bloodshot, and his lips were so pale they had lost all color.
“I’m sorry, Evie. I didn’t know you were pregnant. If I had known….
“Adrian, stop lying to yourself,” I interrupted with my eyes closed.
“You sent me anentire Alaskan king crab, but Chloe is the one who likes seafood. I’m allergic to shellfish.”
“You couldn’t even remember something that simple. How could you have noticed the ultrasound I threw in the trash? How could you have seen through the fake medical report Chloe used to claim I was infertile?”
His whole body went rigid.
The door opened, and Chloe walked in with my parents.
Her eyes were red. The moment she came in,she grabbed Adrian’s hand, and even her excuse sounded almost exactly like his.
“Adrian, I really didn’t know Evie was pregnant.”
“If I had known, I never would’ve let anyone lay a finger on her. Please don’t blame me, okay?”
My mother stood behind her, looked at me once,and hesitated. In the end,she walked over and patted Adrian on the shoulder.
“Adrian, the baby is gone, so it’s gone. Evelyn is still young.She can always have another one.”
My father stood with both hands in his pockets and chimed in as well.
“That’s right. Besides, Chloe already gave you a child,didn’t she? Isn’t Chloe your wife now?”
Adrian turned to look at them,stunned.
Only then did it slowly dawn on him that my parents could say things like this because of everything he had done first.
The anger drained out of him,leaving only exhaustion.
“Get out.”
Chloe froze.”Adrian?”
“I said get out!” Adrian snapped.
After the door closed, silence settled over the hospital room.
Adrian sat down again, his voice broken.
“I’m sorry, Evie. I’m the one who killed our child.”
