My Cruel Bestie Mocked Me to Please His Muse, Unaware I Was Flying to Harvard with a True Genius Chapter 06
“What do you mean by this? We both applied to Boston University. Why did you go to Harvard?”
I was out taking pictures in Harvard Square with my phone on silent, so I didn’t answer.
I happened to check the time and saw the call. When I picked up, he immediately launched into a barrage of
questions.
I listened quietly to his frantic tone.
“Sophie, are you listening to me? Answer me.”
But in the background, Jasmine was shouting. “Zach, what are you doing? Your pan is really hard to use.
Come here quick – it’s about to burn.”
So Jasmine was at Zach’s place. They were cooking together.
Their relationship had already reached that level.
“Yes, I did come to Harvard. But what’s it got to do with you?”
Zach’s voice was still tense. “No, Sophie, I know you. We agreed to visit our future college during the summer after the exams. We both applied to Boston University. Why aren’t you going there instead of Harvard? What are you hiding from me?”
That actually surprised me. Zach – usually so careless about me – was being unusually attentive.
He remembered my summer vacation plan.
Unfortunately, it was none of his business anymore.
I said calmly, “Zach, you’d better go check your pot. If you don’t get over there soon, Jasmine is going to burn
your kitchen down.”
“Wait, don’t hang up,” he said.
It sounded like he put the phone down. Footsteps faded, and then his gentle voice came through. “Jasmine,
don’t move. I’ll handle it.”
I smiled and hung up.
That was Zach’s kitchen. Even though we’d known each other our whole lives, I could go into his study and
his bedroom – but never his kitchen.
Because he was a total clean freak about his kitchen. No outsiders allowed.
Three years ago, I was studying at his house. I got so hungry that I tiptoed into the kitchen to see if there was any bread.
Zach caught me redhanded.
He looked furious. He threw my backpack out the window and didn’t speak to me for two whole weeks.
Later, my mom hired a cleaning service to scrub his kitchen from top to bottom. I brought him his favorite snacks, apologizing and begging, and finally won his forgiveness.
I hadn’t dared to set foot in his kitchen since then.
But now – he’d actually taken Jasmine in.
I had to admit: he really does treat people completely differently.
Childhood friends? If he didn’t like me, he just didn’t like me. What good would another ten years have done?
I breathed a sigh of relief. Thank goodness I’d changed my application. From now on, I’d never see him
again.
That day, Zach called me several more times, but I blocked him.
While he was frantically cursing and calling, I was having the time of my life posting travel photos on social
media.
Kevin handed me a grilled sausage. “Your mom told me you like these.”
I grinned. “Right. You did your homework.”
I took it without hesitation.
“Even though everyone says this stuff is junk food, life isn’t much fun if you take everything so seriously.”
I wolfed down the sausage, looking up at the blue sky over the Charles River.
Kevin handed me a bubble tea and chatted with me about all sorts of things.
I couldn’t imagine a happier, more exhilarating moment in life.
When I got back to the Airbnb that night, my phone was buzzing again.
One unknown number after another kept calling.
I frowned and called one back.
As soon as the call connected, Zach’s furious voice came through.
“Sophie, you finally decided to answer. Who’s that guy in your social media post? You’ve been all over me for
years – why have you been so cold to me lately? Is someone else hitting on you? Who is that jerk?”
