Lila updated me on company news. “Client satisfaction ratings have shot up. Mr. Boone praised you
during the management meeting.”
Life felt normal once more. But I knew Seraphina was still unhappy.
She passed the lobby every day, glancing my way without speaking. I could tell she was planning
something new.
After a week, she could no longer hold back. She marched over to the lobby without warning, hed assistant trailing behind with a stack of printed documents.
She slammed the papers down on my desk.
“Elowen.”
“Ms. Voss.”
“You’re still using handwritten sign-in logs? The digital version exists within our system. Why
refuse to use it?”
“Many clients struggle to work the digital kiosk. Handwritten logs work for everyone.”
“The company invested money into these systems. You’re wasting company resources by ignoring
them.”
“I cannot turn away guests simply because they cannot operate digital tools.”
Seraphina let out a cold laugh.
“Do you truly believe you are irreplaceable? Do you think you’re the only competent person working here?”
“I’ve never thought that.”
“Since your return, crowds gather at the lobby nonstop. Clients ask for you by name, and sales staff linger here constantly. This area is busier than the sales floor itself.”
Several people walking by paused to listen.
“They come here because they trust me.”
“Trust?” She raised her voice sharply. “You’re letting a small position go to your head. Mr. Boone
brought you back out of kindness. Do not overestimate your importance.”
She stepped close to the desk.
‘Your old-fashioned methods-handwritten logs, personal package sorting and memorizing everyone’s details-look busy, but they are empty formalities. This company prioritizes real
efficiency, not your personal performance show.”
I remained silent.
She glanced back at her assistant before turning to me again.
“I have discussed this with Mr. Boone. The lobby will still undergo staff reduction eventually. Standing for eight hours a day is tough on your body at your age.”
Gasps came from the onlookers in the hallway.
“If you have any sense, submit your resignation voluntarily. The company will offer you a fair
standard severance package for a clean exit. If you refuse-”
She left the threat hanging in the air.
I met her gaze steadily.
“You believe the lobby work is simple enough for anyone to handle?”
“Of course. How difficult can a basic lobby job possibly be?”
“Then you do the work for a full day.”
She looked confused. “What?”
“Take my position today. If you finish the day and still believe anyone can do this job easily, I will leave without collecting any final pay.”
The hallway fell completely quiet. Lila stood nearby, nervous and unsure what to do.
“Are you trying to threaten me?”
“This is no threat. You claim the work is easy, while I know it is not. If you win this challenge, I resign. If I win-”
“What do you want if you win?”
“You will never interfere with lobby operations again. I will decide how this work is done from now
on.”
Seraphina’s fingers tapped sharply against the desk surface.
“Fine. I will work your position tomorrow. You can watch.”
“I won’t need to watch. Experience the work for yourself.”
she spun around and walked away. Her heels struck the floor harder and louder than usual the onlookers slowly dispersed.
Lila hurried over, her voice shaking.
“Are you out of your mind? If she works a full day and says the job is easy, you’re really going to quit?”

family.”
“She will never make it through an entire shift,” I said calmly.
“How can you be so sure?”
“She has no idea how much work the lobby truly involves.”
“What will all of us do if you really leave?”
“I’m not going anywhere. I promise you that.”
