“Ashlyn! I won’t let you mate with him!”
Pavel burst in, his sharp gaze sweeping over every wolf in the room.
“Ashlyn is the Luna of my Nightfall pack. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll give her back!”
The wolves roared with laughter.
Pavel frowned and turned his gaze on Caleb at the altar.
“Alpha of the Phantom pack, I know you and Ashlyn only just met. Her father forced this arrangement on you. There’s nothing between you:.
“Ashlyn and I are different. We were together for four years. She only agreed to her father’s arrangement in a fit of anger. Let her go, and I’ll form an alliance with the Phantom pack.
“But if you insist on holding my future Luna here, we’ll settle this in battle. Think carefully. Is one woman you barely know worth it?”
The Phantom wolves erupted.
“Ashlyn is already mated to our Alpha. She is the Luna of the Phantom pack.”

Pavel looked at me in disbelief.
“Ashlyn, you and him… you’re mated?”
I nodded and showed him the silver ring on my hand.
“Yes. Caleb and I are mated. Caleb is my mate now.”
His eyes went red.
“No! I don’t believe you would be this cruel to me!
“You’re only doing this because you’re angry with me. I sent Vivienne away, and I’ll never let her near you again. From now on, it will be just the two of us, all right?”
Pavel rushed toward me as he spoke.
Caleb drew his Beta’s sword and blocked Pavel’s path.

“I respect that you’re the Alpha of the Nightfall pack, and I have no wish to fight you on the day of our mating
ceremony.
“But if you can’t learn to respect my Luna, I don’t mind settling it with you.”
Pavel’s fists clenched, his eyes wild.
“Then let’s settle it! I’m taking Ashlyn home!”
I patted Caleb’s hand and stepped out in front.
“Pavel, you still don’t understand. I didn’t refuse you because of Caleb.
“You chose her over me again and again until I lost all hope in us. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life sharing my mate with another woman.
“Even if the two packs go to war today, I stand with my mate through all of it, win or lose.”
Pavel shook his head in agony.
“No, I never meant for any of this. Vivienne lied to me!
“I thought your father treated her badly. I thought she had been mistreated since childhood, just as I was.
“I never imagined that you were the one who had lived through what I did.
“But you… you never told me anything about your childhood. If I had known sooner, I’d never have let you suffer like that!”
I frowned, and my voice went cold.
“So you only love wolves who have suffered?
“Suffering isn’t a competition, and love can’t be faked.
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to be loved out of pity. But after everything you saw over all those years, did you never suspect the truth? it
“Stop lying to yourself. You just enjoyed being wanted and being fought over.
“I did love you once, and I have truly let those feelings go. If you really feel guilty for what you did to me, then stay out of my life.”
I took Caleb’s hand and walked away.
Behind me came the sharp crack of a slap.
I looked back.
My father had come charging up the altar with Vivienne, and he had struck Pavel across the face.
“Pavel! My daughter Vivienne spent the night under your roof, and you dare cast her aside? Do you think no one in the Moonsong pack will stand up for her?”
The Nightfall wolves and the Moonsong wolves looked ready to come to blows.
I turned around and kept walking,
The arranged mating was complete. From now on, I belonged only to myself.
Whatever passed between Nightfall and Moonsong had nothing to do with me.
