Last Life, He Killed Me for Her. This Life, I’ll Sell Him the Ticket Chapter 04

“Wh-what?”

I froze where I stood, barely able to believe my ears.

I had just spoken to her on the phone yesterday. She had even said she would make me brown-sugar glazed meatloaf once I came home. How could she have suddenly passed away?

“Supervisor, did you make a mistake? That person isn’t my mother, right?”

But he shook his head.

“Colonel Lawson brought the news back himself.”

Evan?

A ringing sound filled my head, and I felt as if the whole world had collapsed before my eyes.

By the time I came back to myself, I had already run to Evan like a madwoman and slapped him hard across the face.

“How dare you say my mother is dead? I’ll kill you.”

Evan struggled against me, then finally grabbed me. “Calm down. Your mother killed herself.”

My mother was so strong. How could she have killed herself?

Even when she had been in that filthy farm-camp shed in my last life, she had never thought of suicide.

Unless she had done it for me.

I staggered over to Evan and asked, “What did you and Wendy say to my mother?”

Wendy hurriedly grabbed my arm. “I’m sorry, Lana. I only told her your transfer clearance was gone.”

I wanted nothing more than to kill her. “What else?”

A flicker of smugness flashed through her eyes.

“We also told her that you could have returned to the city, but because you were afraid she would be reported, you lost the clearance and would have to waste the rest of your life in this backwater.”

I spat out a mouthful of blood and stared hard at Wendy.

Wendy smoothed her hair and sighed.

“Your mother was so fragile. I only mentioned a possibility. It’s not like I was really going to report her.”

“But this works out too. Your father is dead, and now your mother is dead too. From now on, you can stay in this backwater all by yourself, with nothing tying you down.”

She leaned close to my ear and whispered.

“From now on, I’ll take your place and stay in the city with Evan, living a happy life. As for you, you can rot here for the rest of your life…”

Before she could finish, I shot up and clamped both hands around her throat.

Wendy screamed instantly. “Evan, save me!”

Evan kicked me in the chest. The back of my head slammed hard against the wall, and the pain left me dazed.

Evan shielded Wendy tightly behind him.

“Lana, you’re not thinking clearly right now. Your mother killed herself. This has nothing to do with Wendy.”

As soon as he finished speaking, several MPs rushed out and pinned me down.

“What are you doing? Let go of me.”

“If you don’t let me go, I’m reporting this to the Inspector General.”

I struggled desperately, but Evan avoided my gaze and spoke coldly.

“Wendy is about to return to the city. I’m afraid you’ll cause trouble.”

“Once the transfer convoy leaves, I’ll let you go.”

“Take her to the lockup.”

The moment he finished speaking, I was shoved into a pitch-black detention cell.

On the day the convoy was scheduled to leave, Evan followed behind a man.

“General, I didn’t expect you to come inspect their situation in person.”

“The people approved for this city transfer are all excellent, especially a woman named Wendy…”

But the General cut him off. “I’m here for your wife, Lana Wells.”

Evan froze instantly. The General smiled and continued.

“Before Lana’s mother died, she submitted a research report to command. It could push the entire field forward by five years.”

“She said her only wish was for her daughter to return to the city.”

“I know Lana is your wife, so not only will I take her back to the city, but command will also commend you for taking care of her and her mother all these years.”

The General looked at Evan with a smile, but Evan’s face instantly turned deathly pale.

“Now you and your wife won’t have to live apart anymore. Aren’t you happy?”

The moment the General finished speaking, Evan wiped the cold sweat from his forehead.

Just then, an MP ran over with panic written all over his face. “Bad news. Lana is missing from the lockup.”

The General’s expression changed sharply, and he immediately looked at Evan.

“The lockup? Evan, you had better give me an explanation right now.”

“If we can’t find her, or if anything has happened to her, you can forget about staying a colonel.”
