Suffocating rage spread wildly through the pack clinic. The wounded guards were boiling with hatred.
They had ended up as useless Omegas, all because Yelena took it upon herself to tamper with the antidote formula.
The guards struggled to their feet one after another, determined to confront Yelena and demand justice.
Inside the treatment room, facing the tidal wave of public condemnation, Yelena didn’t panic in the slightest.
With red-rimmed eyes, she put on a picture of complete innocence and sobbed. “I admit that the potion I mixed might have had some unforeseen risks.”
She pivoted instantly, her voice dripping with sheer victimhood. “But my only intention was to find a faster way for everyone to heal.”
As she raised her tear-stained face, her voice trembled softly. “I know all of you hate me, and I’m consumed with guilt. But Ms. Conner taught me the foundational formula for that potion.
“I merely made minor tweaks based on the principles she passed down. I just want everyone to recover faster. I never intended to hurt a soul.
“If Ms. Conner knew that this potion would cause permanent damage, why didn’t she stop me with everything she had? Am I really the only one who has to take the fall for this?”
Drowned in despair, the broken guards had lost their ability to think rationally. They were instantly blinded by Yelena’s spun narrative.
“She’s right! Wendy was Yelena’s mentor. She understood the risks way better than us! Yet she only gave us a verbal warning!”
“We’re ruined because of Wendy! We have to force her to answer for this!”
A few guards with lighter injuries dragged their battered bodies up, grit their teeth, and marched toward the exit to confront me.
But the moment they left the clinic, a searing pain tore through their chests, sending them collapsing to the ground. They nearly passed out.
Just then, a fallen guard weakly managed to whisper, “The Moon Goddess… We swore an oath…”
At that exact second, reality struck them. They vividly recalled how they had ignored my warnings and sworn before the Moon Goddess to drink the potion and bear all consequences.
Terror instantly swept through the room. Not a single soul dared to utter another word of blame toward me.
Unable to come after me, the crowd turned their fury back onto Yelena, determined to demand an explanation from her.
But when they turned around, Yelena was already gone,
She had quietly slipped out and fled during the chaotic argument moments earlier.
Unwilling to let it rest, the crippled guards dragged their broken bodies straight to Jacob to demand accountability.
Jacob had also been severely injured in the attack, but because his wolf was exceptionally strong, it had merely fallen into a deep coma. He had yet to realize that his wolf was damaged as well.
Even after listening to the entire ordeal, he refused to believe Yelena had fled out of guilt. “There is no way Yelena’s formula went wrong. She was just terrified by the tragic outcome and went into hiding temporarily.”
Several guards couldn’t stomach his pathetic defense.
“Jacob! You’re still defending her? We’ve all been ruined! Are you seriously going to cover for her?”
“If you refuse to punish her, don’t blame us for taking matters into our own hands!”
Faced with their threatening demands, Jacob’s face turned icy cold.
Every single guard who insisted on pressing charges against Yelena was met with harsh punishment.
He then pulled every string and used all his authority as captain to suppress any rumors that painted Yelena in bad light.
The punished guards were completely heartbroken. Before leaving, one of them glared at Jacob and spat out venomously, “Jacob, if you keep blindly protecting Yelena, there will come a day when you regret the choice you made today. How could you do this to Wendy after everything she’s done?”
Those words failed to shake Jacob in the slightest. “Don’t use Wendy to guilt-trip me. Without her, I’m still the best patrol captain in this pack! Even with her gone, I won’t regret a single thing!”
