I’m Not His White Rose Anymore Chapter 18
Lorenzo woke up gasping for air.
He clutched his forehead and sat on the bed for a long time.
How could he have such a dream?
It must have been because she mentioned divorce, leaving him with some psychological trauma.
He was afraid of nothing, but when he heard her say those words, he was truly scared.
So scared he couldn’t breathe.
Fortunately, it was almost over. Tomorrow was the day Isabella left.
Once Isabella was gone, he could go back to his little woman.
This time, he would make it up to her, so she wouldn’t get tired of him so quickly.
But just then, the hospital called.
“Mr. Moretti? You need to come to the hospital right away. Ms. Ricci has been injured!”
Injured?
Why now?
Lorenzo froze for a moment, then, without much hesitation, he got up and went to the hospital.
At the hospital, another doctor was putting a cast on Isabella’s hand.
Isabella’s hand was broken. Her right hand, the one she used for surgery.
“Lorenzo, what am I going to do? My hand is ruined. How can I serve the country now? I just passed the assessment…”
Tears fell before she could finish her sentence.
Lorenzo felt a surge of irritation, but it quickly subsided.
“If you can’t go, then so be it…”
He wouldn’t have to take care of Lina anymore. And he wouldn’t have to wrong her anymore.
Isabella was secretly pleased. So, Lorenzo really didn’t want her to go.
If she hadn’t gone to the family estate to find him and overheard him arranging for another of his men to take over her and Lina’s protection, she never would have bothered with that stupid assessment in the first place.
If she hadn’t gone, she wouldn’t have been humiliated.
She could still remember that damn doctor calling her an incompetent fraud to her face!
She had studied abroad! Even if she had falsified her resume, she had still legitimately studied medicine in Europe!
Isabella put on a show of being heartbroken about not being able to serve her country.
All her colleagues, even the hospital administrators, came to console her.
The Moretti family also sent a representative to express their sympathies.
Some of the younger nurses were incredibly envious. “Dr. Ricci is amazing. A true medical expert from overseas, treated like a national treasure.”
Isabella smiled humbly, her face showing nothing but patriotic regret.
Her mother-in-law, Sofia, came personally to take Isabella to the Moretti estate.
Lorenzo frowned. “Mom, isn’t that inappropriate?”
The joy that had just started to show on Isabella’s face vanished.
Sofia glared at her son.
“What’s inappropriate about it? Isabella has injured her hand. She can’t cook or do laundry. If we don’t take care of her, who will? Besides, this is what you owe Marco. What the Moretti family owes Marco!”
“I also think it would be too much trouble for you…”
Isabella looked at Lorenzo, her eyes filled with hurt and grievance.
Lorenzo opened his mouth to say something, but then closed it.
Isabella moved into the Moretti estate.
That night at dinner, Lina was ecstatic. “Yay, Mommy doesn’t have to leave! From now on, I can be with Mommy and Daddy all the time!”
Lorenzo acted as if he hadn’t heard. For some reason, he felt restless, like he had lost something important but couldn’t quite grasp what it was.
Isabella started talking about Europe again, about their wonderful time there.
But this time, Lorenzo’s mind was elsewhere.
The old Godfather couldn’t listen anymore. He put down his chopsticks and went straight upstairs.
Isabella’s face stiffened. “Is it because of me…?”
She had a feeling the old Godfather was particularly cold towards her today.
“It’s not your fault. Let him be!”
Sofia, however, was more attentive than ever.
Lorenzo had planned to go home today, but Lina grabbed his hand and started crying.
The old Godfather stood on the landing, taking in everyone’s expressions, especially Isabella’s.
Lorenzo looked back and saw his father, hesitating. “Dad, should I stay here tonight?”
The old Godfather’s expression was cold. “You’re a grown man. Make your own decisions.”
He then returned to his study.
