I Was His Wife, She Was His Everything Chapter 03

I Was His Wife, She Was His Everything Chapter 03

By the next day, every valuable thing in the house was gone.

The genuine leather sofa. The smart appliances. Even the potted plants on the balcony had been

taken.

Veronica stood by the door with a ledger, recording every item as the movers carried it out.

“Make sure you check everything carefully. Don’t leave anything behind. Otherwise, the Hayes family could have this place emptied and everything sold off without even realizing it.”

I stood awkwardly to the side, completely powerless to stop them.

When they finally left, I stared at the empty rooms and let out a bitter laugh.

A year ago, when I had first come here, Ethan had personally picked out every piece of furniture for

Back then, he had just rescued me from my gambling-addicted father.

He had told me,

“From now on, you’re under my protection. You’ll never have to worry about

money again.”

His promise had been so sincere, so passionate, that I believed him.

But now, I wasn’t even sure whether I had chosen the right path.

My phone buzzed with a local job recommendation from Instawork.

A bar was hiring for evening shifts, offering a guaranteed $50 a night plus tips.

If I quietly worked there for two weeks, I’d have enough to pay for the procedure.

At the interview, the manager saw how serious I was and hired me on the spot. I was scheduled to

start three days later.

When I walked out of the bar, I wanted to text Nora.

I hadn’t even finished typing when my stomach suddenly twisted violently.

My vision went black, and I collapsed.

When I opened my eyes again, I was in a hospital bed.

A young nurse saw me wake up and picked up a syringe, adding something to my IV.

“You’ve been severely malnourished for a while. This is a nutritional infusion. I’ve never seen a

regnant woman literally pass out from not eating enough.”

She glanced at me.

“Where’s your husband? That’s incredibly irresponsible of him.”

I clutched the edge of the blanket and answered quietly, “I don’t have a husband.”

The nurse’s expression softened with sympathy.

“The baby isn’t to blame for any of this. Please don’t keep starving yourself.”

I nodded.

I had thought that at the very least, being pregnant would mean Ethan would give me enough

money to eat properly.

But on the day I was discharged, I called Ethan three times.

He hung up every single time.

With no other choice, I borrowed money from Nora to cover the hospital bill.

She transferred it without hesitation.

“You literally passed out, and Ethan still won’t take care of you or his own baby?” she snapped. “How can he be this shameless? I’m going to find him and give him a piece of my mind.”

I quickly stopped her.

“Nora, let me handle this myself. I’ve already made up my mind about the baby. I’ll contact him

tonight.”

To my surprise, Ethan was already home when I returned.

He was wearing an apron and carrying dishes out of the kitchen.

He barely reacted when he saw me.

“Why is there nothing to eat in this house? Is this how you’ve been living?”

Before he could finish, the heavy smell of cooking oil hit me.

I rushed into the bathroom and doubled over, dry-heaving.

Ethan followed me with a frown.

“What’s wrong? Why do you look so pale?”

He handed me a glass of water.

“When did you become so delicate?”

I took the glass and rinsed my mouth. After a moment, I finally managed to steady myself.

“Give me some money.”

The room went silent for several seconds.

Then Ethan let out a mocking laugh.

“So that’s what this is about. You’re asking for money?”

His eyes hardened.

“Those three calls this afternoon were about money too?”

I pushed myself upright, using the wall for support.

“Yes.”

Ethan stared at me, his expression turning frighteningly cold.

“You’re really never going to change. You’ll do anything for money.”

He grabbed his jacket and headed for the door.

Just before leaving, he stopped.

“I’ll have Veronica transfer it to you.”

Then he slammed the door behind him.

I don’t know how long I stood there before I finally made my way to the dining table.

A plate of prime rib sat there, my favorite.

But now, just looking at it made my stomach churn.

Early the next morning, I received a message from Veronica.

[Ms. Miller, you should know when enough is enough. Your constant demands for money will only Make Mr. Hayes more frustrated with you. Mr. Hayes has said that if you ask for money again, your

allowance will be cut in half next month.]

A moment later, another $100 appeared in my account.

I stared at the transaction history for a long time.

In the end, I swallowed my anger.

At least I could afford breakfast.

But a marriage where even basic living expenses had to be begged for was suffocating me.

After thinking it over for a long time, I finally sent Ethan a text.

[If you can’t afford to support me, then let’s get a divorce.]
