I Took Off The Dress And Took Back My Life Chapter 05
“What are you talking about? I didn’t know anything about redevelopment-”Â
The speed of Scarlett’s denial was too fast- so fast she didn’t even notice her voice hadÂ
changed pitch.Â
The redevelopment staff sat in my living room for twenty minutes. As they left, theyÂ
left behind one sentence–this loft’s landÂ
has been included in the urban renewalÂ
scope, and the preliminary assessment for compensation is no less than thirty–fiveÂ
million dollars.Â
Thirty–five million dollars.Â
Jax’s mouth fell open into an O–shape, andÂ
the milk in his hand nearly spilled.Â
Julian’s face turned a ghostly pale. He wasn’tÂ
acting; this was the first time he had heardÂ
that number.Â
But Scarlett was different.Â
Her mouth only twitched once; she hadÂ
better control than Jax.Â
Because she already knew.Â
“The three of you, get out now.”Â
Scarlett grabbed Julian’s arm: “Julian, she’s framing me–”Â
“Scarlett.” I interrupted her. “You worked in the urban planning department for three years and were asked to resign last year for allegedly leaking undisclosed redevelopmentÂ
information. Do you want me to post that information, or will you tell him yourself?”Â
Her face went completely white.Â
Julian finally reacted, frowning as he lookedÂ
at her: “Scarlett, what does she mean?”Â
She opened her mouth, and her eyes turnedÂ
red right on cue.Â
Only this time, her tears didn’t fall fastÂ
enough.Â
“Was the story about your brother hitting aÂ
Porsche a lie?” I added.Â
Jax jumped off the sofa: “Don’t you dare-”Â
“You deleted that Instagram story of you clubbing at 2:00 AM, but I have theÂ
screenshot.”Â
His face flushed red, losing his defiant edgeÂ
for the first time.Â
Julian’s expression began to shatter. HeÂ
looked at Scarlett, then at Jax, his voice.Â
going hoarse:Â
“Jax… did something actually happen orÂ
not?”Â
Scarlett didn’t answer.Â
“Do you still want to know where the six million went?” I walked up to Julian. “YouÂ
can check the bank records today. See if that money paid for a Porsche or went into otherÂ
accounts.”Â
Julian’s hands hung at his sides, tremblingÂ
slightly.Â
Scarlett suddenly grabbed his arm: “Julian,Â
let me explain-”Â
“The pregnancy–is it real?” he asked in aÂ
low voice.Â
Her lips quivered twice, but no sound cameÂ
out.Â
The silence was louder than any answer.Â
I walked to the door and opened it.Â
“Julian. The bank has already filed theÂ
records of you forging my signature for theÂ
mortgage. If I don’t withdraw the complaint.Â
within twenty–four hours, they’ll hand itÂ
over to the police.”Â
“You can’t-”Â
“You still owe me myÂ
five–hundred–thousand–dollar downÂ
payment. Plus the mortgage I’ve covered for the last three months, with interest, every single cent.”Â
I glanced at Jax.Â
“And you. Those slippers on your feet are myÂ
white Ferragamos. Take them off and getÂ
out.”Â
Jax stared blankly at his feet, showing a lostÂ
expression for the first time.Â
Scarlett dragged Jax toward the exit,Â
stopping for a moment as she passed me.Â
“Audrey, you’ll regret this.”Â
“Regret what?”Â
“Regret pushing Julian away. Do you think he’ll come back to you once he’s done with me? He won’t.”Â
Looking at her swollen red eyes, I suddenly found it somewhat laughable.Â
“Scarlett, I don’t want him back. My loft isÂ
worth thirty–five million; he can’t pay me back in a lifetime. As for you–you can’tÂ
even cover your own brother’s gamblingÂ
debts, and you thought you could have myÂ
compensation money? What a dream.”Â
Her back stiffened like a board as she walkedÂ
out.Â
Julian was the last one. He stopped at theÂ
door and looked back, his lips moving.Â
“That six million…”Â
“Check it yourself. After you check it, if you still think she’s worth helping, go ahead. But don’t ever come looking for me again.”Â
“Audrey-”Â
“I’m changing the digital lock. You won’t be able to give a spare key to anyone this time.”Â
The door closed in his face.Â
I leaned against the door and sat on the floorÂ
for a long time.Â
It wasn’t because of sadness. It was because IÂ
finally felt like I had walked out of a deadÂ
end.
