I Took Off My Ring At The Abandoned Station Chapter 06

I Took Off My Ring At The Abandoned Station Chapter 06

I suddenly remembered something.

It was three years ago when Nathaniel’s

company hit a crisis and the cash flow dried

  1. up.

He mortgaged the house, but it still wasn’t

enough.

I kept it from him and went to my mother to

get the dowry money she had saved for me.

Thirty thousand dollars.

When I transferred it into his company

account, I didn’t tell him.

Later he found out and asked: Where did

this money come from?”

I said: Savings.”

He looked at me without a word.

I said: Don’t feel pressured, just pay me

back later.”

He pulled me into his arms and held me

tight.

Abigail,he said, I will never fail you for the rest of my life.”

I remembered that sentence for three years.

He remembered it too, but he remembered it

backwards.

When the plane landed, it was afternoon

local time.

I dragged my suitcase out of the airport; the

sun was bright and the sky was blue.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Chloe Stevens: [Ms. Miller,

the hotel is booked, I’ve sent the address. A

driver is waiting for you at the exit.]

I replied with one word: [Okay.]

At the hotel, I checked in and went to my

room.

The room wasn’t large, but it was clean.

I pushed open the glass doors, walked out,

and sat on a rattan chair.

The wind blew, carrying a floral scent.

I sat there, watching the horizon, watching

the sun slowly sink and turn the sea orange.

My phone vibrated again.

This time it was the lawyer: [Ms. Miller, the divorce agreement has been sent to Mr.

Cross. No reply yet.]

I looked at it for a few seconds and typed:

[Noted.]

Then I turned off my phone.

I didn’t want to see Nathaniel’s response, didn’t want to know if he agreed, didn’t want to know what he thought.

None of that mattered anymore.

I stayed abroad for two months.

In those two months, I did one thing-

started over.

Not starting a new relationship, but

restarting myself.

The Apex Solutions contract was transferred

to my name.

I registered my own company, and Chloe Stevens kept an eye on things back home.

Apex Solutions wasn’t the only client; when I

was making connections for Nathaniel, many clients got to know me, not him.

They were willing to work with me.

In two months, I signed four new clients.

Chloe said over the phone: Ms. Miller, on

Nathaniel’s sidethe company is about to

go under.”

I was sitting on the balcony drinking tea; my

hand paused at those words.

Don’t tell me anymore. From now on, I

don’t need to hear about him.”

I hung up, held my teacup, and looked at the

I suddenly remembered Nathaniel once

saying that when we grew old, we’d buy a house by the sea and watch the sun rise and

set every day.

I had said okaythen.

Now I was by the sea, alone.

It was good.

Six months in.

Chloe Stevens sent over a documentthe divorce agreement signed by Nathaniel.

Leaving with nothing.

He had signed those terms.

I stared at the scan of his signature for a long

time.

His handwriting wasn’t pretty, it was

crooked, but every stroke was heavy.

I used to tease him about it, and he’d say,

It’s my personality.”

Chloe asked: Ms. Miller, how should we

proceed?

I replied: Just finish the legal process.

I hung up and stood on the balcony, looking

out at the sea.

Six months.

The sea was still the same sea, the sky still

the same sky, and I was still me.

But some things were different.

An unknown number.

I picked up.

Abigail.
