I Took Off My Ring At The Abandoned Station Chapter 03

Nathaniel’s expression finally shifted.

“What did you say?”

“Divorce. We’ll file as soon as we get back.”

He stared at me for a few seconds.

“Abigail—I…”

“Ah—!”

Daisy’s scream interrupted Nathaniel.

Daisy was crouching by a bench, clutching her calf, her face pale.

“A snake! There’s a snake!” her voice was trembling. “I’ve been bitten…”

Nathaniel looked at me once.

Then he turned and ran toward Daisy.

Nathaniel knelt down to check the wound on Daisy’s calf.

Daisy grabbed his arm, sobbing hysterically: “Nathaniel, am I going to die…”

“No.” Nathaniel tore the hem of his shirt and tied it above Daisy’s bite.

Just then, the sound of an engine came from the distance.

Roadside assistance had arrived.

The tow truck stopped, and the driver jumped out: “You guys called for help?”

Nathaniel stood up and pointed at Daisy: “She’s been bitten by a snake, she needs a hospital immediately.”

The driver looked at Daisy’s leg, then at me: “The cab only seats two. You can sit on the flatbed, but it’s not safe.”

Nathaniel didn’t hesitate.

He opened the cab door and helped Daisy inside.

Then he looked back at me once.

“Abigail, wait here. I’ll get her to the hospital and then call a car for you.”

“Wait how long?” I asked.

“Not long.”

“Not long” again.

He got in and shut the door without a trace of hesitation.

I watched as Nathaniel drove away with another woman.

And I was left behind.

I stood in the service area.

No car. No signal. No water. No food.

Nathaniel didn’t look back.

He wasn’t coming back. I knew it.

Not because he didn’t care anymore, but because he believed I would always wait for him.

Just like every time before, when he told me to wait, I waited.

I dug my bag out of the trunk and checked it.

Wallet, ID, a bank card. Enough.

I started walking along the highway.

I didn’t know how far it was to civilization, or how long I’d have to walk.

The blisters on my feet had long since popped; every step was agony, but I didn’t stop.
