I Take the Fall, but They Pay the Price Chapter 04

I Take the Fall, but They Pay the Price Chapter 04

Author: 12 Cents
I had no reason to refuse.
After we agreed on my start date, I politely declined their invitation to lunch and prepared to leave for my next appointment.

Unexpectedly, the moment I stepped out of the private room, I ran into Megan and Liam.

The pair froze for a moment.

Megan looked at me in confusion and asked, “What are you doing here?”

In the ten years we had been together, Megan had never heard me mention an interest in coffee, let alone see me frequent a place like this.

Liam suddenly jumped to his own conclusions. “How could you, Flynn? Did you hear we were meeting a client here today and deliberately followed us?”

I could not help but laugh.

Although meeting here was just a coincidence, I did have something I needed to discuss with Megan.

I headed toward her and said, “I need to talk to you.”

At those words, Megan’s expression instantly softened.

A hint of triumph appeared in her eyes, but her tone remained even. “So, you finally realized you were wrong after spending a night cooling off at home? Good. First, start by apologizing to Liam…”

I cut her off before she could finish.

“Megan, I want a divorce.”

Megan’s head snapped up as she stared at me in disbelief.

A flash of delight crossed Liam’s eyes, though he covered it up with an expression of shock. “Flynn, what are you saying? Are you still mad over what happened at yesterday’s press conference? Megan only did that to protect the company’s reputation…”

I interrupted him coldly. “Was it really about protecting the company’s reputation, or protecting you? You know the answer to that.”

Liam immediately looked aggrieved. “I knew it. You’ve always looked down on me because I’m just an assistant. I… I’ll just leave.”

Megan’s arm shot up to grab him. Then, she turned to me, irritated. “Flynn, when did you become so petty? Liam is new to the industry. If something like that gets out, his career would be over.

“But you’re different. You have experience and skill. Something like this is nothing for you.

“I already promised I’d make it up to you. What more do you want?”

How ridiculous.

If it happened to Liam, it was serious enough to destroy his career, but if it happened to me, suddenly it was nothing?

Just yesterday, they insisted that no other company would ever hire me if I left.

They just said whatever they wanted.

I couldn’t be bothered to listen anymore and pulled out the divorce agreement. “I said I want a divorce.”

No matter how harsh I tried to be, actions would always be more convincing than words.

Only then did Megan realize I wasn’t joking. Her expression instantly shifted. “Flynn, are you serious?”

I nodded.

The next second, she snatched the papers from my hands and tore them into pieces.

She gritted her teeth, and her voice was firm. “Don’t even think about it. I’m not divorcing you.”

Then, as if she suddenly thought of something, a smug expression returned to her face. “Flynn, are you upset because I didn’t come home last night?”

I just looked at her calmly without answering.

In the past, whenever Megan showed Liam the slightest bit of attention, I would get jealous and complain.

After she made me take the blame for Liam and after staying out all night yesterday, she probably thought I just lost my temper.

Convinced she had figured me out, she took the initiative to explain, “My phone died last night, so I couldn’t tell you. Liam’s stomach condition flared up. He doesn’t have anyone to take care of him, so I stayed to look after him. That’s why I didn’t come home.”
