I Called Him from Under an AVALANCHE, But He Declined to Bed His Secretary Chapter 05

I Called Him from Under an AVALANCHE, But He Declined to Bed His Secretary Chapter 05

Empty. The closet, the vanity, every shelf that had

held her things bare.

Like no one had ever lived there at all. Sienna

came to the doorway behind him.

Oh my God did Hazel leave? Her eyes were already shining with unshed tears.

Julian, is it because of me? I know she doesn’t

want me here just send me away if that’s what it

takes.”

She watched him from under her lashes while she

spoke. She knew her role this was the part where he pulled her close and told her she wasn’t

going anywhere.

But one minute passed. Then two. Sienna’s facade began to crumble.

Julian hadn’t said a word. He stood there, eyes locked on the empty room, somewhere she couldn’t follow.

He moved into the room slowly, scanning the emptiness until his eyes caught the nightstand.

Two things sat on the surface, waiting for him. His

jaw tightened. For a long moment, he couldn’t make himself walk over.

Sienna tugged at his sleeve. Julian, she’s just throwing a tantrum. She’ll cool off and come crawling back.”

Get out.”

His voice came out raw. Sienna’s face went rigid she opened her mouth, then closed it.

But Julian looked like something inside him had cracked open, and even Sienna knew better than to push. She left. He waited until the door clicked shut.

He crossed the room like a man moving underwater and opened the first folder.

[Patient: Hazel]

[Procedure: Dilation and Curettage After Miscarriage]

Julian’s breath stopped. He read the words twice, like they were written in some language he didn’t know.

Miscarriage…

Was Hazel pregnant?

Their third child. His throat closed as if a fist had

wrapped around it.

He kept reading.

[Location: Crestview Hospital, Snowcrest]

The shock was already unbearable. This broke

something deeper. Snowcrest?”

Crestview? That hospital was minutes from Sienna’s villa. What was Hazel doing in

Snowcrest?

She’d been there. Right under his nose. And he’d known nothing. His breathing turned ragged.

He grabbed his phone and called his assistant. The Snowcrest villa get me the security footage from two weeks ago. Now.”

He sank onto the bed. His grip on the phone kept tightening until his knuckles went white. Two

weeks ago…

He’d known the avalanche risk was climbing that was why he’d pulled Sienna out early. But Hazel had gone there…

While he waited, he opened the second folder.

Same hospital. Same date. Ophthalmology report.

Partial permanent blindness. The words left his

mouth before he could stop them. His voice

shook.

–

Yesterday her eye. That emptiness he’d

mistaken for another bad mood.

She’d looked that way ever since she found out about Sienna flat, unreachable. He’d stopped. reading her face a long time ago. Now he understood why.

The girl whose eyes used to light up every room blind. His hands were dialing her number before his brain caught up.

One ring. Two. Three. Then the automated voice

came on, flat and final.

His whole body locked. The panic hit him like at

wall.

He switched to messages. [Hazel, where are you? Please. Can we talk?]

He hit send. The message bounced back-

undeliverable.

His face went blank. His eyes kept darting. She’d

blocked him.

Even during the first divorce, she’d never cut him.

off completely. His phone buzzed the assistant had sent the footage.

His fingers barely obeyed him as he opened the file.

There she was. Tearstreaked, one hand pressed to her stomach, picking her way carefully across. the snow. She stopped in front of the villa.

Then the snow came down. Julian’s chest seized like a hand had reached in and squeezed.

His breath came in jagged pieces. He couldn’t do anything but watch her disappear under the white. Hazel”

Her voice crackled through the camera’s audio, small and breaking. Juliansave me”

Then nothing. Just snow and silence. Julian’s hands were shaking when the realization hit him.

He tore through his call log. Hazel. The exact date of the avalanche. Midafternoon.

The timestamp matched the footage exactly. That

she’d been calling for help.

call he’d declined

And what had he done? Julian squeezed his

burning eyes shut.

Don’t call. That was what he’d told her. And now

he understood she was never coming back.

For the first time in his life, Julian felt what it was like to lose something he couldn’t get back. During the first divorce, he’d always known deep down,

–

–

under all the guilt that she’d forgive him.

That certainty had made him untouchable. But

this time…

He knew, with a sickening clarity, that Hazel was done. Sienna appeared in the doorway.

She’d pieced it together. The smile she was trying

to hide tugged at the corners of her mouth. Julian, maybe this is for the best. She’s gone but you still have me.”

She took his hand and pressed it to her belly. And our baby.”

Julian stared at her stomach, but all he could see was Hazel buried, bleeding, losing their baby in the snow. His hand jerked back like he’d touched a flame.

Sienna’s face crumbled, Julian”

He didn’t hear her. He was dialing Hazel’s number

again and again each time hitting the same

dead line. Then he stopped.

Something clicked behind his eyes. He shoved

past Sienna and was out the door before she

could say a word.
