I Am Not An Omega, I Am The Queen Of The Deep Sea Chapter 05
The deck was dead silent.Â
Just the sound of waves slapping against the hullÂ
-loud, sharp, like invisible slaps.Â
Vaelor was soaked. His perfectly tailored coatÂ
hung off him like a wet rag. He was still grippingÂ
that piece of fabric he’d torn from my dress, hisÂ
knuckles white. He stood there like a statue thatÂ
had been struck by lightning.Â
“Da… Daddy…”Â
Little Morrigan was the first to break. She pointedÂ
at the still–churning whirlpool on the surface, herÂ
whole body shaking. “Was that Mommy? DidÂ
Mommy turn into… a monster?”Â
“Shut up!” Vaelor spun around. Those cold, distantÂ
eyes were now bloodshot and feral.Â
Morrigan flinched so hard she hiccupped andÂ
stopped crying.Â
Even Alaric couldn’t keep his cool anymore. “ThisÂ
doesn’t make sense… How could a wolf turn into aÂ
siren? This has to be some trick Mom pulled toÂ
scare us, right, Dad?”Â
He looked desperately at Vaelor, searching for aÂ
“reasonable” explanation.Â
Alaric stepped forward, his voice rising. “Dad! SayÂ
something! What is go-”Â
“I said shut up! Can’t you hear?!” Vaelor roaredÂ
back.Â
Alaric’s mouth snapped shut. But his fistsÂ
clenched so tight his knuckles cracked.Â
Torren wasn’t standing. Somehow, he’d ended upÂ
sitting on the wet deck, legs stretched out in frontÂ
of him, like a puddle of mud. Rain pounded hisÂ
face, and he didn’t even try to avoid it. His mouth.Â
hung open. His eyes stayed locked on theÂ
shrinking whirlpool.Â
“She… she couldn’t shift into a wolf… but she canÂ
shift into a siren?”Â
No one answered him.Â
“She’s… she’s a siren? Why is she so huge? She’s…Â
she’s really Mom?”Â
His voice got smaller with every word. The lastÂ
few were barely a whisper.Â
Morrigan hid behind Alaric, peeking out justÂ
enough to ask, “Alaric… does Mommy not want usÂ
anymore?”Â
Alaric didn’t answer.Â
Neither did Torren.Â
Vaelor sucked in a breath, like a drowning manÂ
gasping for air.Â
He was an Alpha. He’d ruled the northernÂ
territories for years. He’d handled rogue attacks,Â
border rebellions, internal coups. Of course heÂ
knew sirens lived in the ocean. There were oldÂ
scrolls about them in the underground library-Â
creatures that lived in the Shadow Trench, olderÂ
than any wolf, more dangerous than any rogue.Â
But he’d never thought wolves and sirens could beÂ
connected.Â
And he’d definitely never thought the Omega who’dÂ
slept beside him for seven years was a siren.Â
But the last seventeen years started flashingÂ
through his mind like a broken reel.Â
Thalassa’s always–cold body temperature.Â
Thalassa never eating cooked fish.Â
Thalassa getting weirdly excited every time itÂ
rained.Â
And… Thalassa’s “anemia” and “weakness” thatÂ
never got better no matter what they tried.Â
It wasn’t frailty.Â
It was dehydration.Â
“Turn the boat around.” Vaelor’s voice came outÂ
rough as gravel.Â
“But Mom-”Â
“I said turn around!” Vaelor exploded, veins bulgingÂ
in his neck. “Get the rescue teams out here! CallÂ
every search crew on the coast! I don’t care if sheÂ
turned into a damn fish and swam to the middle ofÂ
the ocean!”Â
His jaw was locked. His eyes burned withÂ
obsession.Â
“Thalassa. You think you can leave me like this?Â
Dream on.”Â
“Even if you turned into a fish, I’ll catch you andÂ
lock you in a tank. Keep you forever.”Â
I heard that threat from deep in the ocean.Â
Sirens‘ hearing underwater is hundreds of timesÂ
better than wolves‘.Â
I rolled my eyes, grabbed a passing king crab, andÂ
cracked its claw off. Then I enjoyed the meat.Â
Seafood really is better. But Vaelor hated the smellÂ
of seafood, so I never ate any at Stormhowl Pack.Â
Now I could finally feast.Â
A sleek orca swam up beside me. A man wasÂ
riding it–silver–white hair drifting in the water likeÂ
a glowing cloud.Â
That was my guard captain. Cassian. Silent,Â
reliable. He’d been handling the underwaterÂ
kingdom’s affairs while I was gone.Â
“Your Majesty, you’re finally back.” Cassian’s voiceÂ
was dark. “Seventeen years. You never should’veÂ
gone to land for that long.”Â
He’d heard Vaelor’s threat too. His fury exploded.Â
“That damn wolf dares treat you like that! I’ll skinÂ
him and feed his pelt to the sharks! I’ll go flip their boat right now!”Â
“No,” I stopped him. “My children are still on thatÂ
boat.”Â
Cassian froze. His silver hair floated around him inÂ
the current.Â
“They’ll find out soon enough what they lost,” I said, then sighed. “Now tell me. What’s been happening in the ocean lately?”Â
I disappeared with him into the deep.Â
But back on land, the Stormhowl Pack was aboutÂ
to fall apart.
