His Heart Beat for Her, So I Left Chapter 09
Serena’s POVÂ
A dull thud echoed as his knees hit the tile floor. The sound alone made me wince.Â
He dragged himself across the floor on his kneesÂ
to my side, then grabbed my hands and pressed them, trembling, against his cheeks.Â
“Why won’t you look at me?”Â
“Serena, just touch me.”Â
“Please… just talk to me.”Â
“I’m falling apart…”Â
I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and gently pulled my hands back.Â
“You cannot force love.”Â
“Jacob, you should have seen this coming a longÂ
time ago.”Â
“The moment you started hiding things from meÂ
and stopped being honest, our fate was sealed. Even if we had gone through with the mating. ceremony, even if we had pups together, even if we’d spent our whole lives growing old side byÂ
side, I still would have walked away from your without looking back.”Â
“Don’t play the victim just because you cried a little.”Â
“You’ve had everything your own way this whole time, and now you want people to feel sorry forÂ
you.”Â
“The world doesn’t work that way.”Â
“Take care of yourself.”Â
I cleared the dishes and took them into theÂ
kitchen. When I came back out, the front door wasÂ
wide open. He was gone.Â
A stack of legal transfer documents lay on theÂ
table. Jacob had transferred all of his assets toÂ
- me. He had signed them, and the transfers tookÂ
effect immediately. Beside them was aÂ
handwritten letter.Â
Just a few word: [I will pay for this.]Â
I accepted everything without any guilt. JacobÂ
owed me all of this. I deserved to beÂ
compensated.Â
The funds in the account were more than enoughÂ
to support me for the rest of my days. But I still stayed at the small studio, working, eating, and laughing with my coworkers.Â
“Hey, has your ex been bothering you again?” Lily handed me an iced latte.Â
I pushed the straw through the lid, took a sip, and said slowly, “That’s ancient history.”Â
“I’ve moved on ages ago. Why are you still fixatedÂ
on that loser?”Â
Everyone burst out laughing. Lily glared at Darren, who was laughing the hardest.Â
“What? I’m just looking out for Serena!”Â
“Oh please, worry about yourself first.” Darren was doubled over laughing. “Didn’t your mom hook.Â
you up with a blind date? How’s that bald guy she found for you? Let’s see the picture.”Â
Lily started laughing too. She pulled up the photoÂ
and held the phone right up to Darren’s face.Â
“Scared you yet!”Â
“You lifelong bachelor! Keep it up and you’ll laughÂ
what little hair you have left right off!”Â
Then Lily looked at herself in the mirror and struckÂ
a pose.Â
“I don’t know what my mom is so worried about.”Â
“They say a woman hits her prime at thirty and can still be gorgeous at forty.”Â
“A girl like me deserves the very best partner out there. Don’t you think?”Â
I smiled and agreed. “Lily’s right.”Â
“I’m kidding.” She rolled her eyes playfully. “I’m better off on my own. Loving yourself is what really matters. Who wants to be tied down in aÂ
relationship anyway?”Â
“You should all learn from Serena on that one.”Â
A horn blared from downstairs.Â
A young man was straddling a motorcycle. HeÂ
took off his helmet, tilted his head up toward theÂ
building, and shouted, “Serena!”Â
“C’mon! Let’s go grab some seafood boil!”Â
Lily got up and looked down through theÂ
floor–to–ceiling window.Â
“Well look at that, Serena. Another guy here forÂ
you.”Â
“How many has it been lately?”Â
Before she could keep teasing me, I grabbed myÂ
bag and headed downstairs for my date.Â
Lily turned around and met my smiling eyes.Â
“Go on now. Have fun out there.”Â
“You know I will.” I waved at her. “Bye.”Â
I ran downstairs into the setting sun and jumpedÂ
onto the motorcycle. The wind whistled past myÂ
ears. The hem of his shirt fluttered in the wind,Â
carrying the clean scent of soap.Â
I closed my eyes. The corners of my mouth lifted.Â
slightly.Â
No one is ever truly irreplaceable. We are all independent individuals at heart.Â
I live by my own rules. My world has always been.Â
mine, and mine alone.
