He Was Never Shy, Just Not With Me Chapter 02

He Was Never Shy, Just Not With Me Chapter 02

When I woke up the next morning, Logan was cooking in the kitchen.

He smiled as he placed a sandwich in front of me. “Your favorite ham sandwich. Try it quickly.”

Looking at the thick layer of ketchup squeezed inside, a wave of nausea washed over me. When my dad beat my mom the hardest, he drew blood, which splattered into the tomato scrambled eggs my mom had made, and he forced me to eat it.

I was the one who called the police, and Logan was the one who stayed by my side to give the statement and helped me take care of my mother in the hospital.

Back then, he held me close, crying for me, swearing he would treat me well for a lifetime.

“I’m sorry, my mind is still foggy from sleep. I forgot you don’t eat tomatoes.” Logan moved the plate away. Before he could say anything else, the sound of the front door keypad chiming rang out.

Hailey Brooks pushed the door open and walked in, handing a document to Logan.

I looked at Logan in shock.

His movements stiffened for a moment before he explained to me, “I only gave her the password last time when I asked her to come over and pick up some files.”

Suddenly, I remembered a video Hailey had posted.

She, her friend, and Logan were eating hotpot together, and the background was my own living room. She was even wearing my pajamas.

Yet every time I wanted to have a small gathering with my friends, we always had to go to their places.

Logan would help us order ingredients and buy snacks, and he would even prepare small party gifts—his only requirement was that we couldn’t do it at home.

Because he was a neat freak and couldn’t stand the smell of hotpot. Logan pushed the sandwich on the table over to Hailey.

She was absolutely thrilled.

“Oh my god, Mr. Reynolds, you actually remembered that ketchup is my absolute favorite, and you added so much! I will definitely work extra hard to repay you.”

She didn’t forget to express her envy toward me.

“Nora, you are way too lucky. I can’t believe you managed to find a man as detail-oriented as Mr. Reynolds.”

“Last night at dinner too—I happened to mention in passing that my roommate can’t eat spicy food, and Mr. Reynolds made sure the skewers he got her didn’t have a single speck of spice!”

I felt incredibly uncomfortable.

Before this, I thought I was just being overly sensitive, believing that Logan’s resistance to my friends meant he didn’t love me that much.

He always said that couples need to have independent social lives and personal downtime.

Yet he could extend that same care and affection even to a newly hired intern.

Even in the middle of the night while we were asleep, as long as it was her calling, he would drop everything and stop.

All because her power went out, or there was a stranger outside her door.

When I told Logan that she should just contact property management or call the police since it was fast and efficient, I received a freezing interrogation in return.

“If your friend called you for help in the middle of the night, would you really not go?”

Snapping back to reality.

Hailey was carefully poking Logan’s arm with her finger.

“Did I say something wrong to make Nora upset? Why is she ignoring me?”

Logan smiled gently at her. “It’s nothing, her brain just hasn’t fully woken up yet.”

Then he looked at me, his tone serious. “Don’t overthink things. Her friend is allergic to chili peppers, so he had to be careful.”

As he spoke, he even used his hand to catch the breadcrumbs falling as she ate the sandwich.

Meanwhile, just last week when I didn’t wash the dishes right away because of severe period cramps, I was severely scolded by him.

My chest felt incredibly suffocated. I turned around, grabbed my bag, and walked out the door. The whole way, their shared laughter from moments ago kept echoing in my mind. When I arrived at my best friend’s house, Chloe was trying on her bridesmaid dress.

“Quick, tell me if this looks good! Does it match your wedding gown?”

“This is the most important day of your life, and I’ve been waiting for it for so long!”

Seeing that I couldn’t stop my tears from falling, she didn’t ask a single question. She immediately dropped the dress and wrapped her arms tightly around me.

“Just cry. You’ll feel better once it’s all out.”

By the time I finally gathered myself, two hours had passed.

Hearing what had happened, Chloe was even more furious than I was, directly cursing out Logan’s entire ancestry. “I will absolutely make sure Logan and that homewrecker pay for this.”

Hearing her sudden, dramatic declaration, I couldn’t help but burst into laughter through my tears.

I cancelled the makeup trial that had been scheduled for that afternoon.

The other party confirmed the cancellation multiple times, warning me that all deposits were strictly non-refundable.

I confirmed it anyway.

Every single arrangement for the wedding was officially cancelled. My five-year relationship with Logan was completely broken off right then and there.

At midnight that same evening, I received a text message from him. It contained only two words: Happy Birthday.
