He Wanted Me Hidden, I Became Untouchable Chapter 03

Julian had just finished discussing the marriage alliance with Emilia’s father when he caught a familiar figure at the turn of the stairs.

Before he could get a good look, the person had disappeared down the hallway.

He frowned and instinctively pulled his phone from his pocket.

Luna Bennett sat at the top of his messages. Even his wife, at least on paper, didn’t have that privilege.

He still hadn’t opened the message Luna had sent him that afternoon.

“It’s my birthday, so I’ll let you come home late. But you’d better bring me a present.”

After reading it, a faint smile touched Julian’s lips.

Emilia’s father caught the smile immediately and smiled himself.

“Everyone says you’re cold as ice, but I guess that isn’t quite true.”

Julian looked up, as if he had only just realized he was smiling, but he didn’t hide it.

“You flatter me, Mr. Whitmore.”

Emilia’s father waved him off. “All right, I’m going to check on my little princess. I still need to ask what she thinks about this alliance. If she says no, there’s nothing I can do.”

Julian nodded and didn’t press the subject any further. He had made his point.

What he hadn’t expected was for Grant Whitmore to walk straight toward him.

Grant was the Whitmores’ adopted son. Perhaps because he felt he owed the family for taking him in, he protected Emilia like it was a full-time job.

He was terrified something might happen to his little sister.

She had been protected like something precious her entire life, and everyone said Grant was hopelessly devoted to his little sister.

As for a marriage between the Whitmores and the Ashfords,

Emilia’s father might have said the final decision was hers, but getting past Grant would be even harder.

“I heard from Dad that you’re here to discuss a marriage between my sister and your nephew,” Grant said, getting straight to the point.

Julian didn’t deny it. He nodded calmly.

“And?”

Grant let out a cold laugh. “You should forget it.”

He lifted his eyes to Julian, the corner of his mouth curling with contempt.

“Emmy won’t agree. And even if she does, I won’t let the Ashfords use her to climb any higher.”

He didn’t soften the words at all.

He clearly didn’t care about Julian’s power or status, or whether Julian’s pride took a hit.

Julian knew exactly who Grant was.

Grant had spent three years in Baycrest on a field assignment,

so he could return home and succeed Emilia’s father with a clean, respectable record.

A marriage between the two families would benefit both sides. There was no downside.

Julian couldn’t understand why Grant was so resistant, or why Grant had become so openly hostile toward him.

Julian narrowed his eyes and looked Grant over.

Before he could figure it out,

his assistant hurried over and whispered in his ear.

“Mrs. Ashford is arguing with someone in the back garden.”
