He Signed Our Divorce Without Reading Chapter 08

I didn’t argue with him.

I took out my phone and called the police.

“Hello. Someone is preventing me from leaving an office. The address is-”

Grant’s expression changed.

He immediately released the door.

“Evelyn, have you lost your mind?”

“No. I just want the police to explain whether a husband has the right to hold his wife against her will.”

He reached for my phone.

I stepped back and put the call on speaker.

The dispatcher’s voice came through clearly.

“Ma’am, are you safe right now? Does the other person have a weapon?”

Grant’s hand froze.

He didn’t dare touch me again.

“She’s safe,” he said toward the phone. “This is a marital dispute.”

“Then move.”

I looked straight at him.

Several seconds passed before Grant finally stepped aside.

I told the dispatcher I was no longer in immediate danger, then ended the call.

Grant’s face was livid.

“You called the police just to force me to give in?”

“You refused to let me leave.”

He forced down his anger, and his voice suddenly softened.

“Fine. I admit I’ve neglected you lately.”

“Starting tomorrow, I won’t meet Vanessa alone anymore. I’ll delete her fingerprint from the house tonight. Is that enough?”

He took out his phone and opened a travel itinerary.

“I wasn’t lying about the honeymoon. I’ve already contacted the hotel and the private jet company.”

The trip was to the South of France.

Wineries. Yachts. Private beaches.

Everything Vanessa had recently saved on social media.

I got seasick, and I never drank wine.

I scrolled down and found Grant’s messages with the travel consultant.

Vanessa says every woman would love this. Book whatever she chose.

Even the honeymoon meant to make things up to me had been chosen by Vanessa.

“My flight leaves tonight.” I handed his phone back. “Save this trip for someone who actually wants it.”

I opened the door.

Vanessa stumbled backward.

She had been listening outside the entire time.

“Evelyn, I had no idea things would get this bad.”

Her eyes filled with tears almost instantly.

“If you’re leaving because of me, I’ll resign right now.”

She rushed into the office, grabbed a sheet of paper, and picked up a pen.

“Harbor Point, the promotion, the office-I’ll give all of it back to you.”

“I never meant to damage your marriage.”

She kept talking.

But the tip of her pen never touched the paper.

Grant snatched it from her hand.

“Enough. This has nothing to do with you.”

“But Evelyn is leaving…”

“That’s her choice.”

Grant crumpled the blank sheet and threw it into the trash.

“You’ve worked too hard on Harbor Point. Why should you resign?”

Vanessa bit her lip.

“But the company can’t function without Evelyn.”

Grant looked at me.

The last trace of his desire to stop me disappeared.

“Whitmore Development does not depend on one person.”

“If she wants to leave, let her.”

He probably thought that if he acted indifferent, I would become afraid again.

I simply nodded.

“Fine.”

I turned and walked toward the elevator.

Grant called after me.

“Evelyn, once you leave Whitmore Development, you’ll never find another boss who puts up with you the way I have.”

“When the real world knocks you down, don’t come crawling back to me.”

The elevator doors slowly closed.

Vanessa moved to stand beside him.

This time, I didn’t wait for Grant to come after me.

That night, I went to the airport with one suitcase.

I left the house key, my company access card, and my wedding ring in his office.

Ten hours later, I arrived in London.

Robert Hayes came to meet me himself.

“Welcome back, Evelyn.”

He handed me my new ID badge.

Regional Investment Director – Evelyn Hart

had finally returned to the position I should have accepted three years earlier.

At my first meeting, Robert pushed an acquisition file across the table.

“The fund has secured exclusive development rights to the old financial district downtown.”

“The board has chosen you to lead this two-billion-dollar project.”

I opened the file and recognized the property.

Grant had spent two years preparing to acquire it.

He always said that if Whitmore Development secured that land, it would become the largest real estate company in the country.

He didn’t know that the property was mine to manage now.

And he would never use my plans again.
