He Married My Best Friend, Then Lost Me Forever Chapter 10
Zachary left.Â
But he did not go home.Â
Sophia called me, crying.Â
“Lillian, I lost to you again. Are you happy now?”Â
I did not understand what she meant.Â
Then I heard her say, “Ever since we were little, youÂ
were the girl every parent compared their kid to.Â
You were pretty, smart, and perfect. Every time IÂ
stood beside you, I was just the dull backdrop thatÂ
made you shine. No one ever noticed me. ZacharyÂ
only had eyes for you too.”Â
“Every time you told me you liked him, I wanted soÂ
badly to tell you that I liked him too.”Â
“But I knew that even if I said it, you wouldn’t giveÂ
him to me.”Â
“It took me so much effort to find a reason to getÂ
close to him and finally be with him the way IÂ
wanted. So many people like you. Why did youÂ
have to fight me for Zachary?”Â
“The day you came back, I thought I could finallyÂ
beat you once on my wedding day. But theÂ
moment you returned, Zachary only had eyes forÂ
you again. Do you know how scared I’ve beenÂ
these past few days?”Â
Her sobs sounded broken and miserable.Â
Every word carried the resentment in her heart.Â
But was any of this really my fault?Â
“Sophia, everyone has the right to pursueÂ
happiness. I never stopped any woman fromÂ
getting close to Zachary. Whoever ZacharyÂ
chooses is his decision.”Â
“When we joined the Army, you once asked me if IÂ
would choose him or you if we both liked theÂ
same person. Back then, I gave you my answer.”Â
I had chosen her.Â
I had always believed that a true friend was rare inÂ
this life.Â
That was why I had valued friendship more thanÂ
love.Â
But she had not believed me.Â
In the end, she became the blade that cut meÂ
deepest.Â
“Sophia, the day I came home and you handed me that little box of wedding candy, I imagined youÂ
giving me your wedding favors while I stoodÂ
beside you as your only bridesmaid, just like we said when we joined the Army.”Â
“I even wondered whether I would sobÂ
uncontrollably at your wedding someday.”Â
I had imagined all of that.Â
The one thing I had never imagined was that IÂ
would still be her only bridesmaid, but as theÂ
bridesmaid at her wedding to my boyfriend.Â
After Sophia heard what I said, her sobs grewÂ
more desolate.Â
“Sophia, this ends here. From now on, let’s just beÂ
strangers.”Â
I hung up and blocked her contact.Â
The next morning, shortly after I woke up, I heard Zachary’s mother complaining to my mother. about how he had suddenly asked for a divorce.Â
My mother listened quietly, her face completelyÂ
expressionless.Â
Only after Zachary’s mother finished complainingÂ
did my mother say calmly, “Good. Better thanÂ
letting him keep ruining people’s lives.”Â
Zachary’s mother looked confused.Â
She did not understand what my mother meant.Â
My mother did not explain.Â
But Zachary confessed.Â
When Zachary’s mother tried to go home andÂ
opened my front door to leave, a sharp slapÂ
echoed through the hallway.Â
Then Zachary’s father’s furious voice rang out.Â
“Have you lost your mind? You and Sophia areÂ
already married, and now you’re telling me youÂ
love Lily and want to be with her? What do youÂ
think Sophia is? What do you think Lily is?”Â
A clear handprint marked Zachary’s face.Â
He told them the whole truth about the act he hadÂ
put on for Sophia.Â
Then he said, “The person I’ve loved has alwaysÂ
been Lily. The person I wanted to marry was herÂ
I..”Â
“Zachary,”Â
I spoke up and cut him off. “I have a boyfriend.”Â
He looked at me and smiled.Â
“So what if you have a boyfriend? Married peopleÂ
can get divorced, let alone people who aren’t even married yet.”Â
“And I don’t believe you could forget all thoseÂ
years between us so quickly.”Â
After hearing him, Zachary’s mother looked completely shocked.Â
“Lily, were you two really together?”Â
A faint smile appeared in Zachary’s eyes.Â
He was certain I would tell the truth.Â
But I slowly opened my mouth.Â
“No.”Â
“Never.”Â
The smile on his face froze, and panic flashedÂ
through his eyes.Â
“Lily, what are you talking about? We wereÂ
together for five years!”Â
“Do you have proof?”Â
When we were together, I was the one who loved.Â
taking photos and recording everything.Â
Zachary had never made us public.Â
He had never left behind a single trace that we hadÂ
loved each other.Â
The evidence I had saved had been deletedÂ
completely on the day he told me he was marryingÂ
someone else.Â
“The photos you took, our messages, all of thatÂ
can prove it.”Â
“Zachary, we served together. It’s normal forÂ
friends in the Army to take pictures together whenÂ
they go out. If that gave you the wrong idea, I canÂ
delete all of them right now.”Â
His body shook violently, and his eyes were nearlyÂ
overflowing with despair.Â
His voice choked as he asked, “Just because IÂ
helped Sophia, you’re cutting me off completely?”Â
Even now, he still did not know what he had doneÂ
wrong.Â
“Zachary, you’re married now. Live your life withÂ
your wife. Everyone on base knows you gotÂ
married yesterday. Getting divorced now won’t beÂ
good for either of you.”Â
“I don’t love her.”Â
My hand paused on the door.Â
Then, out of one last bit of kindness, I remindedÂ
him, “That was your choice.”Â
He was the one who had let go of our relationshipÂ
first.Â
Regretting it now meant nothing.
