He Married Me for the Heart Inside My Chest Chapter 14
We met at an open–air rooftop lounge.Â
The wind bit at my face.Â
Vera showed up wrapped in a thick shawl, her skinÂ
pale almost transparent.Â
“You said there was a third person in the accident. What do you mean?”Â
She sat down, leaning in immediately.Â
I didn’t answer. Just slid a voice recorder acrossÂ
the table.Â
I pressed play. A man’s shaky voice filled the air:Â
[…Ms. Vera told me to hit the car. She said justÂ
scare Elowen, put her in the hospital a while, make her miss the exchange student interview…]Â
[I didn’t know it’d rain so hard. I lost control of theÂ
car…]Â
The man’s voice trembled from the speaker.Â
Vera’s hand jerked. Her teacup shattered on theÂ
floor.Â
“Fake! You paid someone to lie!”Â
She screamed, her voice sharp and cold on theÂ
rooftop.Â
“You know it’s true, Vera.”Â
I stared her down. “You had the accident staged to keep Elowen from leaving. To stay close to Silas.”Â
“And Elowen died.”Â
“You thought you’d get her heart next, save your failing one.”Â
“But life messed with you. The heart went to me.”Â
Vera shrank back in her chair, eyes wild andÂ
empty.Â
“No… that’s not it… I loved her…”Â
“Loved her enough to kill her?”Â
I stood, walked over, and bent down.Â
“You forged the will, paid trolls to ruin me. WantedÂ
me dead.”Â
“Really, you just wanted my heart back, didn’tÂ
you?”Â
Vera suddenly laughed, wild and unhinged.Â
“So what if I did? That heart was mine! Silas wasÂ
mine!”Â
“You thief! You stole my whole life!”Â
She lunged forward, hands reaching for my throat.Â
I shoved her away, sharp and clean.Â
“Dream on, Vera.”Â
“I sent all the evidence to the police.”Â
A familiar figure stepped out from behind theÂ
screen.Â
Silas Hale.Â
His face was worse than Vera’s. Hollow, like deadÂ
wood.Â
“Vera… it was you?”Â
His voice shook, thick with disbelief.Â
Vera froze. Stared at him. Tears spilled instantly.Â
“Silas… let me explain… I didn’t mean to…”Â
“Explain what?”Â
Silas stepped forward and slapped her hardÂ
across the face.Â
She crumpled to the floor.Â
“You killed Elowen. Tried to kill Lila too…”Â
“You monster.”Â
I stood by, watching coldly.Â
Karma.Â
The “only one” Vera craved turned her into aÂ
cold–blooded killer.
