Adrian didn’t listen.
After leaving the Rookery Building, he used nearly every resource Moretti Security had at its
disposal.
He searched airports, train stations, private clinics, and Family connections across multiple states.
Any time someone claimed they’d seen a woman who looked like Natalie in another city, Adrian
went there himself.
Over the next six months, he searched New York, Boston, Miami, and Denver.
Every single time, it was someone else.
People inside the Moretti Family began to complain.
Some said he was wasting too many resources on a woman who wasn’t even a Moretti,
Others reminded him that Selena was his legal wife.
One capo even said outright, “Carter’s gone. Good. It’s time you gave Selena her proper place in the Family’s inner circle.”
For the first time, Adrian lost control in a Family meeting and flipped the table over.
He removed the man from Moretti Security’s board on the spot.
But afterward, he only felt worse.
Because when Natalie had still been there, he’d never defended her like that.
Now she would never see it.
Selena remained at the Lake Forest compound throughout those six months.
Her stomach grew larger by the day.
She still cried in front of Adrian.
She still told him she wasn’t feeling well.
But when he looked at her now, that old instinct to comfort her was gone.
Every time he saw Selena, he remembered the blood covering the compound floor.
He remembered the report that said Natalie was eight weeks pregnant.
And he remembered the door he’d locked behind him.
Many nights, Adrian sat alone in the dark living room, clutching the ring Natalie had left behind.
Only then did he finally understand.
Natalie really wasn’t coming back.
Late one night, Adrian woke on the sofa and got up to get some water from the kitchen.
As he passed Selena’s room, he heard her talking on the phone.
Her voice was deliberately low.
“I told you, don’t contact me for a while. Chicago’s too hot right now. I’ll wire the rest to the same offshore account. Keep your mouths shut. If Adrian ever finds out those men at the compound were
mine…”
Adrian stopped dead.
At that exact moment, his phone suddenly rang.
The voice inside Selena’s room instantly went silent.
The call was from Moretti Security’s captain.
The man was so excited he was practically shouting.
“Adrian, we’ve got a lead. We picked up footage in El Paso of a woman who looks a lot like Natalie from behind.”
Adrian tightened his grip on the phone.
He didn’t immediately burst into Selena’s room and confront her.
Because this time, there was only one thought in his mind.
Find Natalie first.
