He Made Me Feel Lost, So I Became Someone He’d Never Find Chapter 06

Grant hadn’t eaten in three days.

His eyes were sunken, and exhaustion showed in every part of him.

He had tried everything he could think of.

He even went to a psychic and paid a small fortune for a reading. The verdict was that whatever bond they’d

had had run its course.

And still, there was no sign of Elena.

The front door of the old house opened, flooding the room with light.

Grant winced at the brightness.

“Daddy!”

A little boy ran into his arms.

“Daddy, you and Mommy are getting married tomorrow! I’m all ready to be the ring bearer and bring you the rings.’

Grant stroked Owen’s hair, then looked up at Camille.

“Cancel the wedding. Elena still hasn’t been found. I can’t go through with it right now.”

Camille’s smile froze.

“Grant, don’t joke about this. I already sent out the invitations. My parents, my relatives, my friends- they’ve traveled all this way, and now you’re just going to call the whole thing off?”

“Before we broke up, you promised me my dream wedding. How can you go back on your word now?”

She grabbed his arm and tugged at him.

Grant’s expression darkened, irritation creeping into his voice.

“I didn’t say we’d never have the wedding. I said we’ll wait until Elena is found.”

Camille immediately put on a wounded expression,

Tears gathered in her eyes, making her look fragile and wronged.

“Grant! Do you have any idea how much I suffered when I had our child, or how many people looked down

on me?”

“Everyone called my son a bastard. They called me shameless!”

“Owen has even developed sorte emotional problems from growing up without a father around.”

“And now you’re telling me you want to cancel the wedding? Do you want everyone dragging my son and me through the mud all over again?!”

Camille took Owen by the hand and turned to leave.

“I’m sorry, Camille. I was wrong.”

Grant hurried after her and wrapped his arms around her from behind.

“The wedding will go ahead. I won’t let you or Owen go through that again.”

The next day, Grant stood at the altar.

The bridal bouquet was one Elena had chosen herself—a simple, elegant arrangement of lily of the valley.

Elena had once told him the meaning behind the flowers.

They symbolized the return of happiness.

Would his own happiness ever return?

Grant looked up.

Camille stood at the far end of the aisle in her wedding dress, the bouquet in her hands.

His eyes suddenly reddened.

He suddenly remembered the day he had gone with Elena to try on wedding dresses.

The fitting-room curtains had slowly opened.

The moment he saw her, something had caught in his chest, and he could only stare.

For that one instant, happiness had felt so close.

Now, all Grant felt was a deep sense of loss.

“Grant, do you take the woman beside you to be your wife?”

Camille looked at him expectantly.

But no matter how hard he tried, Grant couldn’t make himself say, “I do.”

“Wait!”

The shout saved Grant from having to answer.

It was Mrs. Whitaker and Tessa.

“Tessa! Mom! I’m so happy you came to my wedding-”

Mrs. Whitaker cut Camille off.

“You don’t get to call me Mom. Elena is my only daughter.”

Tessa pulled an envelope from her bag and shoved it into Grant’s hands.

“Read it yourself.”

Grant opened it.

Inside was a DNA paternity report.

“Owen… isn’t my son.”

Rage surged through him, making his hands shake.

He flung the report at Camille.

“You lied to me again? You took me for a sucker and had me raising your son for free?”

Camille grabbed Grant by the shoulders, her face twisting with panic.

“I never lied to you, Grant! That report has to be fake. Elena must have had them forge it.”

“This is all Elena’s doing. That bitch is behind this!”

Grant couldn’t listen to another word.

He slapped Camille hard across the face.

“You don’t deserve to say her name.”

The bouquet fell from Camille’s hands and hit the floor.

Delicate petals scattered across the floor.

What had begun as a celebration ended in a complete disaster.
