He Locked Me in His GOLDEN CAGE, So I Locked Him Behind Iron Bars Chapter 06
Two weeks later.Â
I stood outside the charity gala’s VIP lounge, draped in a pure white gown Julian had pickedÂ
out.Â
He’d dragged me along to the event.Â
Voices drifted out from the lounge.Â
“No wonder you’ve been skipping our parties.” Chloe was snarling. “You said you weren’t into girls like her, but you’re stabbing me in the back? Are we even friends anymore?”Â
Julian toyed with his wine glass, completelyÂ
indifferent. “She’s with me now. Luke doesn’t have anyone left by his side.”Â
Chloe’s eyes lit up. “Oh, right! Why didn’t I think ofÂ
that?”Â
She hesitated a moment later. “But Hailee is a sneaky one. What if she’s spending your money while still playing Luke?”Â
Julian raised an eyelid, spitting out two words:Â
“She wouldn’t dare.”Â
Chloe relaxed, beaming. “I didn’t know you had it inÂ
you–what a martyr. Once I get my hands on Luke,Â
dinner is on me!”Â
Julian gave a dismissive grunt.Â
Chloe immediately started gossiping about theÂ
circle, her energy manic.Â
Julian gave an occasional, clipped reply.Â
I kept my head down, clutching my phone.Â
A text from Luke popped up: [Where are you?]Â
I paused, then replied: [Taking care of something.Â
I’ll be back later.]Â
[I’m coming to pick you up.]Â
I bit my lip and sent him a lighthearted voice note:Â
“Don’t bother, I’m out with some friends. Just waitÂ
for me to get home, okay?”Â
A second later, he replied: [Okay.]Â
I let out a breath.Â
The door to the lounge swung open.Â
Julian stood there, tall and imposing, an eyebrowÂ
raised. “We’re here. Why are you just standingÂ
outside?”Â
I shook my head. “Didn’t want to interrupt.”Â
Chloe let out a cold laugh nearby. “At least yourÂ
know your place.”Â
Julian reached for my hand. He looked entirelyÂ
calm, showing no sign of the frantic energy he’dÂ
projected moments ago.Â
“Who were you texting?” he asked.Â
I shoved my phone away instantly. “Nobody.”Â
Chloe’s alarm bells went off, and she scanned myÂ
dress and jewelry with a venomous look.Â
She shot Julian a glare. “You’re awfully generous.Â
That necklace…”Â
Before she could finish, Julian took my hand withÂ
a languid, careless movement and marched meÂ
toward the center of the gala.Â
Chloe stomped her foot behind us. “Good, see if I care! I’m going to have a hell of a night anyway!”Â
I followed Julian, an eerie sensation crawling overÂ
my skin.Â
For the first time in two lifetimes, we were gettingÂ
along peacefully.Â
He greeted people with effortless, unhurriedÂ
charm.Â
I observed him carefully.Â
When Julian wasn’t spiraling, he looked like aÂ
refined, aloof young heir. No one would guess thatÂ
behind closed doors, he was a volatile, obsessiveÂ
madman.Â
I heard some of the other trust–fund kidsÂ
whispering: “Money talks. So what if Luke rejectedÂ
Chloe? His childhood sweetheart is happy enoughÂ
holding Julian’s cash.”Â
Julian caught the murmur and glanced down atÂ
- me.Â
I kept my expression stone–cold.Â
I clung to his arm with one hand and held a smallÂ
piece of cake in the other.Â
Julian’s lips quirked up.Â
The next second.Â
My face went pale.Â
A figure just cut through the crowd, headingÂ
toward the hallway on the other side.Â
It was Luke.Â
What the hell was he doing here?!Â
I took a step to follow him, but Julian’s fingers. tightened on my wrist. “Where are you going?”Â
“Restroom.” I said.Â
He gave a mocking smirk. “Restroom’s not thatÂ
way.”Â
I bit back a retort. “Nobody told me where it was, and I’ve never been to a place this huge. Are you seriously going to mock me for that?”Â
My tone was sharp.Â
The people around us widened their eyes, glancingÂ
over to see how Julian would react.Â
The room fell silent.Â
“Not mocking you,” he scoffed, gesturing to aÂ
server nearby. “Show her the way.”Â
Once Julian was out of sight, I fired off a text toÂ
Luke: [Where are you?]Â
Minutes ticked by. Nothing.Â
I walked out of the restroom, only to find theÂ
server still waiting.Â
“Mr. Laurence is worried you’ll get lost,” the serverÂ
said politely. “He asked me to walk you back to hisÂ
side.”Â
I stared at him.Â
I gave a fake cough. “I’m actually good friends.Â
with Chloe. She just messaged me to meet her. I’llÂ
have her take me back to Julian later, okay?”Â
The server looked hesitant.Â
“You know how Chloe gets,” I pressed. “And I haveÂ
my phone, how could I possibly get lost?”Â
“Okay,” the server relented. “I’ll get back to workÂ
then.”Â
I smoothed out my dress and headed toward theÂ
hallway Luke had disappeared into.Â
The corridor was opulent, lined with heavy, closedÂ
doors.Â
I pressed my ear to each one, listening. Finally, I heard a noise from the one at the very end.Â
My hand hovered over the handle, then dropped.Â
Why was Luke even here?Â
Did he… find out I was lying?Â
If he was inside and saw me in this gown, whatÂ
would he think?Â
Suddenly.Â
The sound of shattering glass erupted from theÂ
room.Â
I didn’t think twice and shoved the door open.Â
Blood was splattered all over the floor.
