He Let Her Move Into His Dorm, I Moved Out of the Country Chapter 07
Adrian forced himself to remain calm, ignored the murmurs, and hurried back to his office.Â
Inside, investigators from the university’s Office of Faculty Conduct dropped the materials they had gathered, the notes from their interviews, and theÂ
financial records in front of him.Â
“Professor Grant, please explain your relationship with your student, Mia Carter.”Â
Adrian opened his mouth. He wanted to say thatÂ
he and Mia had a perfectly properÂ
professor–student relationship. He wanted to say that he had a fiancée he loved deeply.Â
But when he looked at the report and the financialÂ
records the investigators had brought out, heÂ
could not say a single word.Â
Because no perfectly proper professor–studentÂ
relationship would make everyone around them.Â
think the professor and student were a couple.Â
And no professor and student would open a jointÂ
bank account together.Â
As for the fiancée he supposedly loved, he hadÂ
never mentioned Lauren to anyone at work.Â
No one knew about her. No one would believe thatÂ
he and Lauren were really together.Â
The conduct officer looked at his silence and tookÂ
it as guilt.Â
“Professor Grant, as a professor, you’re expectedÂ
to uphold professional standards. You shouldÂ
know better than anyone what the consequencesÂ
are for having an inappropriate relationship with aÂ
student.”Â
Adrian nodded. “…Yes.”Â
He knew better than anyone what theÂ
consequences were for an inappropriateÂ
relationship between a professor and a student.Â
He had simply always believed that what he hadÂ
with Mia was nothing more than a pureÂ
professor–student relationship, with nothingÂ
shameful about it.Â
He looked after Mia only because, in her, he sawÂ
the shadow of Lauren when she was young.Â
He thought about how hard Lauren’s life had beenÂ
back then, and how he had also been too young atÂ
the time to give Lauren a good life or help herÂ
much.Â
So now that he had the ability, he helped MiaÂ
without holding anything back.Â
Again and again, when Mia got sick, he took her toÂ
a doctor. He lowered his standards to take her onÂ
as his student. He let Mia move into his facultyÂ
apartment and redecorate it however she wanted.Â
He brought Mia to his home.Â
He had been busy trying to make it up to theÂ
young Lauren in his memories, the girl who hadÂ
suffered so much back then.Â
And because of that, again and again, he had ignored the Lauren standing in front of him now.Â
And after disappointment piled up again and again, Lauren had completely given up on him.Â
In the end, the university’s investigation did not rely entirely on the rumors that had spreadÂ
everywhere.Â
After round after round of evidence gathering, there was enough proof to show that Adrian andÂ
Mia had not had an inappropriateÂ
professor–student relationship.Â
But the damage caused by the situation was undeniable, and so was the fact that Adrian hadÂ
abused his position to favor Mia.Â
In the final decision, Adrian was not fired.Â
However, he lost his professorship, and everyÂ
project under his name was suspended. HisÂ
research funding and related benefits were alsoÂ
revoked.Â
Adrian became a laughingstock.Â
Not only among students and colleagues, but alsoÂ
among relatives and friends.Â
Because a student had posted the story on theÂ
university subreddit, people online mocked Adrian as well. Even though they had not figured out hisÂ
identity, that did not stop them from laughing atÂ
him.Â
They mocked Adrian for being so blind and foolishÂ
that he could not even tell where the line wasÂ
between his fiancée and his student. In the end, heÂ
lost both his fiancée and his job.Â
Adrian heard those comments every day, but heÂ
never argued back.Â
Because everything they said was true.Â
But Mia could not bear it, and she was even lessÂ
willing to accept it.Â
She came to Adrian and begged him to help her,Â
hoping he would give her one more chance.Â
“Professor Grant, please help me again, okay?”Â
“As long as you help me again, I’ll give youÂ
anything you want. I can give you myself.”Â
Adrian looked coldly at the red–eyed woman inÂ
front of him. He wished he could gouge out theÂ
eyes of his past self, the man who had once pitiedÂ
her and taken care of her.Â
How blind had he been to think that this woman,Â
who chased status and profit, who would stop atÂ
nothing to get what she wanted and was willing toÂ
debase herself, was anything like the Lauren fromÂ
his past?Â
“I can’t help you,” he said coldly.Â
“And I have nothing to do with you anymore.”Â
“Don’t come looking for me again.”Â
Mia dropped to her knees with a thud and clung toÂ
Adrian’s leg.Â
“I only ended up like this because of you! You can’tÂ
just abandon me!”Â
Adrian kicked her away and turned to leave.Â
But Adrian was Mia’s last hope. How could MiaÂ
possibly give up?Â
When she realized she could no longer win his sympathy by playing on his emotions, Mia decided to go all the way. She took flimsy, baseless claims and started telling everyone that she and Adrian had been together for a long time.Â
A professor being involved with his student set off a firestorm online.Â
What had originally been limited to the university spread across the entire internet.Â
Although the investigation eventually clearedÂ
things up, Mia was arrested for spreading falseÂ
rumors.Â
But because of the incident, Adrian was demotedÂ
again.Â
Before, he had at least still been a lecturer. Now he was nothing more than contract support staff.Â
Countless times, Adrian wanted to leave. But every time the thought surfaced, he would think, What if Lauren comes back?Â
If he stayed in this city and stayed at his oldÂ
workplace, maybe when Lauren returned, he wouldÂ
still have a chance to run into her again.Â
And so, Adrian kept waiting.Â
Year after year passed. Just when Adrian noÂ
longer held any hope, he finally saw that familiarÂ
figure at an industry conference.Â
Five years had passed, yet that familiar faceÂ
showed no trace of age.Â
Instead, compared with when she had been withÂ
him, she now seemed to shine even brighter.
