He Let Her Move Into His Dorm, I Moved Out of the Country Chapter 04
Half an hour later, a police cruiser stopped in front of the house.
A police officer got out and walked up to Adrian.
“Mr. Grant, you reported a burglary?”
“Yes.” Adrian’s voice was hoarse. “All of my wife’s things are gone.”
The officer continued asking, “Only your wife’s belongings? Were any of your own belongings taken?”
Adrian shook his head. “No.”
Another officer who had been checking the scene walked over and shook his head at the officer taking the report.
“There are no signs of forced entry.”
After hearing that, the officer taking the report paused for a moment before speaking in a more careful tone.
“Mr. Grant, is it possible your wife left on her own?”
The moment the officer said that, the last thing Lauren had said before his business trip flashed through Adrian’s mind.
“Let’s end this.”
A cold sweat broke out all over Adrian in an instant.
“No!” His voice suddenly rose. “She definitely didn’t leave on her own! She would never leave!”
Both officers frowned, but neither of them said anything more.
After a brief silence, the officer continued the questioning professionally.
“Mr. Grant, when was the last time you saw your wife?”
Adrian choked for a second before answering in a rough voice, “…Five days ago.”
The officer asked, “Have you had any contact with your wife during these five days?”
Adrian shook his head. “No.”
The way the officer looked at him became hard to describe, but in the end, professional restraint kept him from saying anything harsh.
After the two officers finished asking detailed questions, they told Adrian they would go back and look into it.
Before leaving, they reminded him again.
“Mr. Grant, before we have the results of our investigation, you may also want to ask your wife’s friends and relatives.”
“Based on our experience, in situations like this, family and friends often know more.”
Adrian nodded to show that he understood.
After seeing the two officers out, Adrian returned to the living room.
The empty living room gave him a sense of hollowness he had never felt before. Thinking about what the officers had said, Adrian desperately wanted to ask someone, only to realize that he did not even know whom to ask.
Relatives?
Lauren’s parents had died when she was young, and she had been raised by her uncle.
But her uncle’s family had never treated her well. When Lauren was a child, they barely even fed her enough, and Adrian had secretly brought her food every time.
Later, after Lauren grew up and started working, she only sent her uncle money every month. Other than that, she had no contact with him.
Friends?
All these years, Adrian had buried himself in his career, telling himself he was working hard to give Lauren a better life. He had never cared about Lauren’s life.
He did not know what friends she had, or where those friends were.
He had never even cared enough to know exactly where Lauren worked.
After going over everything in his mind, Adrian realized with grief that he and Lauren had been together for so long, and had even been engaged for three years, yet after Lauren left, he had no way at all to find out where she had gone.
But Adrian refused to believe it.
He kept feeling that he was too panicked, that in his panic he must have overlooked something.
Yet from morning until dark, after thinking through everything he possibly could and even contacting Lauren’s uncle, Adrian still found no clue.
Only then did Adrian have no choice but to accept one fact.
All these years, he had said he loved Lauren and that everything he did was for her own good, but what he had actually done was ignore her again and again.
Just then, his phone, which had been silent all day, finally rang.
Clinging to the possibility that it might be Lauren, Adrian answered with sudden hope, only to hear a police officer’s businesslike voice.
“Mr. Grant, we reviewed the security footage from your residence and the airport. Your girlfriend left home on her own and boarded a plane.”
