He Let Her Move Into His Dorm, I Moved Out of the Country Chapter 02
What objection could I possibly have?
From the moment Mia appeared, I stopped having any real place in Adrian’s life.
Adrian had sworn countless times that he would love me forever and never let me suffer even the slightest hurt. But long ago, he had already given every bit of his tenderness and favoritism to Mia.
Whether it was my birthday, our anniversary, or any other important day, one phone call from Mia was enough to make Adrian leave me behind.
It was not that I had never questioned him or fought with him over it. But every time, Adrian’s apology sounded painfully sincere.
He said the person he loved was me. He said he only saw Mia as a student, and that he looked after her only because she was alone and pitiful.
Again and again, I backed down under the weight of his apologies.
But today, watching him let Mia move into the apartment I was not allowed to enter, watching him allow her to casually rearrange the things I was not even allowed to touch, and watching the indulgent smile that appeared on his face whenever he looked at her, I could no longer lie to myself.
I forced a smile and fled.
At the campus gate, a security guard stopped me and asked me to sign the visitor log.
I took the pen and wrote my name out of habit, but a dull ache spread through my chest.
We had been engaged for three years. I was Adrian Grant’s rightful fiancée, yet whenever I came to his workplace to see him, I was still treated like a stranger.
Every single time, I had to sign in.
How blind and foolish had I been back then to believe his apologies over and over again?
With my heart completely cold, I returned to the company.
The email refusing the company’s overseas transfer had already been drafted. I simply had not sent it yet.
I looked at the computer screen, at the hundreds of densely packed words I had written about love and family, and gave a self-mocking smile. Without hesitation, I hit delete and sent back a text that said, [I accept.]
The decision to leave was settled in just a few words, but every step of the paperwork that followed was more complicated than the last.
The company would handle my personal transfer documents, but the accounts and records tied to both Adrian and me had to be handled in person.
Because of that, I specifically took the next day off. I planned to go to the bank first, withdraw the money that belonged to me from the joint account Adrian and I shared, and then close it.
But when I arrived at the bank, the answer the bank representative gave me was completely beyond anything I had expected.
“Ms. Reed, there is no balance in your joint account.”
I could not believe what I had just heard.
Adrian and I had opened that joint account the year we got engaged. Back then, we agreed that each of us would deposit a fixed amount every month as the starting fund for our future home after marriage.
After three years, the balance might not have reached six figures, but there should have been at least tens of thousands of dollars in it.
Why was there not a single cent left?
I pressed for an explanation and asked the representative to help me look into where the money had gone.
She was very helpful. After checking the records, the way she looked at me carried a hint of pity.
“Ms. Reed, the funds in the joint account you shared with Mr. Grant were transferred last month into another joint account held jointly by Mr. Grant and another person.”
The representative was not allowed to tell me who the other person was.
I did not continue asking.
After leaving the bank, I called a friend and asked him to help me look into it.
A few minutes later, the results were sent to my phone.
It turned out that as early as two years ago, Adrian had opened a joint account with Mia behind my back.
And every dollar that should have been in that now-empty account had been transferred into the account he shared with Mia.
I could not describe what I felt. In that instant, it was as if every sound in the world disappeared.
