A short while later, Julian went upstairs.
Chloe was sitting on the bed. The second she saw him, her face crumpled. “Julian…”
Julian looked at that wide, innocent face. Then he smiled.
“You visited the zoo three times this past month. Every single time, you lingered in the reptile
house.”
He pulled out his phone, swiped through a few photos, and tossed it onto the bed in front of her. “You really thought the cameras wouldn’t catch you?”
Chloe glanced down at the screen. Her act slipped.
“You let the snake out. You hired someone to remove the grate from the air vent.”
Julian’s voice was flat and cold. “The stunt with the wall, the crying, the tantrums. All of it was to get me to put Audrey in that basement. You knew exactly where that snake would go.”
Something cracked in Chloe’s expression. But she held the smile, frozen and brittle.
“Julian, did she get to you? You can’t just believe everything she…”
“Don’t.” Julian cut her off. “You studied animal behavior. You knew exactly what that python would

Tears spilled down Chloe’s face. She lunged for his arm. “I didn’t! Julian, you have to believe me…”
Julian stepped back.
“Listen to me. If I don’t find her, if she doesn’t come back, I’ll’ make sure your little act becomes a
permanent reality.”
Chloe crumpled to the floor, white as paper.
Julian walked out. He didn’t look back.
