He Kept Postponing Our Marriage for Her Crises… So I Ended It Myself Chapter 13
“Sir! Sir!”
Ms. Jenkins came running after him, out of breath. “Miss Mercer, she’s crying. She wants you.”
Julian closed his eyes. Drew in a breath.
He opened the car door and stepped out.
Before he even made it inside, Chloe came running out with her arms wide open.
“Julian, where are you going… you said you’d come back for Chloe…”
Julian stood there. He didn’t reach for her the way he always did.
Only one thought remained.
His wife was missing. He didn’t have room for anything else.
Chloe stopped.
She looked up at him, all wide-eyed hurt. “Julian?”
“Chloe.” His voice was barely there. “Go back upstairs and rest. I’ve got something I need to deal
with.”
“Ms. Jenkins, take her up.’
He didn’t wait for a response. He walked straight to the surveillance room beside the garage.
He’d had the security system upgraded himself, originally for Chloe’s safety.
Every camera feed from the property ran through this room.
He pulled up the footage from the last few days.
There it was. The afternoon before everything happened, someone dressed as a maintenance worker had been on the property.
They’d crouched by the basement, worked at it for a few minutes, and pried the ground-level grate loose.
The angle didn’t catch their face.
He made a call. Had his people dig into the zoo’s escape.
The answer came back quickly: someone had deliberately unlocked the secondary enclosure at the reptile house.
The python hadn’t escaped. It had been released.
And the nearest house in the neighborhood was his.
Who would do this?
And why?
He was still turning it over when something on the screen stopped him cold.
