He Canceled Our Ring to Buy Her a Bag, and I’m the One Who Looks Foolish Chapter 05
When the plane broke through the clouds, the cityÂ
lights fell away behind me.Â
I leaned against the window and watched the night below grow farther and farther away.Â
All at once, I felt relax, as if the stone that had pressed against my chest for four years had finally been lifted.Â
The flight attendant brought a warm towel.Â
I wiped my hands.Â
The nude–pink bridal manicure was still there.Â
But I no longer had to wait for that ring.Â
More than ten hours later, the plane landed in Iceland.Â
Daniel came to pick me up.Â
He was wearing a thick outdoor jacket and standing by the arrivals exit, holding a sign.Â
On it was written, [Welcome back to the team, Evelyn Bennett, photographer.]Â
My eyes suddenly stung when I saw those words.Â
For the past four years, everyone had called meÂ
Mrs. Walker, Ryan’s future daughter–in–law, andÂ
Ryan’s bride–to–be.Â
Only Daniel still remembered that I was EvelynÂ
Bennett, the photographer who had once won theÂ
International Young Photographer Award.Â
Daniel took my suitcase.Â
“Are you cold?”Â
I shook my head.Â
“No.”Â
I was, actually.Â
The wind in Iceland was like a knife, cuttingÂ
painfully across my face.Â
But compared with Ryan’s home, where there hadÂ
never been a place for me, this place somehow letÂ
me breathe.Â
The car drove toward the field base.Â
Outside the window stretched a vast expanse of wilderness.Â
The sky was gray–blue, and snowcappedÂ
mountains stood in the distance.Â
Daniel handed me a packet of materials.Â
“The team leaves for the South Coast tomorrow.”Â
“Do you still have your gear?”Â
I froze for a second.Â
I had not used my camera in a long time.Â
Ryan had said I would not need it after marriage.Â
He said photography was too exhausting, and thatÂ
I would be better off staying home to help himÂ
manage his studio.Â
I had almost believed him.Â
“I do.”Â
“I brought it.”Â
Daniel smiled.Â
“Good.”Â
“Evelyn, you don’t have to rush to prove anything.”Â
“All you need to do is pick up your camera again.”Â
I lowered my head and looked at the materials inÂ
my arms.Â
The corners of the pages curled slightly in theÂ
wind.Â
At that moment, I suddenly felt it.Â
I had really escaped.
