He Came Knocking with a Baby in Tow Chapter 09
After New Year’s, Lucas started properly trying toÂ
win me back.Â
He showed up at my apartment every day- sometimes with breakfast, sometimes with flowers, sometimes with nothing, just sitting on the couch helping me with work.Â
Echo’s take on it was: “Dad’s being such a clingyÂ
tag–along.”Â
Lucas heard that and got so mad, but he didn’tÂ
dare argue.Â
After all, he was still on probation.Â
I wasn’t in a rush to say yes.Â
After all, that hurdle from five years ago wasn’tÂ
that easy to get over.Â
But I have to say, Lucas had really changed thisÂ
time.Â
He wasn’t that high–and–mighty Harrington heirÂ
anymore. He was just a regular guy who learned toÂ
cook for me, joined parent–child activities for Echo,Â
and pushed off important meetings just to be withÂ
- me.Â
Once, I had a fever in the middle of the night. HeÂ
drove me to the hospital without a second thoughtÂ
and stayed there all night.Â
The next morning, when I woke up, I saw himÂ
asleep by the bed, dark circles under his eyes.Â
At that moment, my heart softened.Â
“Lucas,” I gently pushed him, “we need to talk.”Â
He looked up fast, his eyes full of nervousness:Â
“You gonna kick me out?”Â
I shook my head: “No.”Â
“I just wanted to ask, are you really sure aboutÂ
this? Not just a whim? Not just guilt?”Â
He held my hand, his eyes so serious: “Eva, theseÂ
five years, I’ve thought about you every single day.”Â
“I know I was an asshole before. I know I hurt you.”Â
“But please believe me, this time I’m serious.”Â
“I wanna marry you–not a fake marriage this time,Â
a real one.”Â
“I wanna live with Echo, wanna wake up and seeÂ
you two every day.”Â
I looked at him, my eyes getting hot.Â
“What about your parents?”Â
He smiled: “They can’t wait for me to marry youÂ
now.”Â
“Ever since Echo told them I had a boyfriend,Â
they’ve been scared.”Â
“Now they think, as long as it’s a woman, it’s fine,Â
as long as it fixes me.”Â
I laughed at that.Â
“Okay then,” I said, “we can try.”Â
“But Lucas, if you let me down again, I’ll neverÂ
forgive you.”Â
He held me tight, his voice a little choked: “I won’t,Â
never again.”
