He Came Knocking with a Baby in Tow Chapter 07
After that short Christmas, the new fashion weekÂ
started.Â
As soon as Echo came back, he broke up withÂ
Lucas.Â
Because Lucas had snuck back to spendÂ
Christmas with me and didn’t bring him.Â
Echo swore he’d never play with him again.Â
But when Lucas showed up with the newest Lego.Â
set to apologize,Â
the little guy was right back to chasing after him. yelling, “Dad’s the best!”Â
Lucas still hung around the show all the time.Â
If anything even happened, he’d pop right up.Â
Echo called him a simp.Â
Lucas heard that and got so mad.Â
But for some reason, having them around didn’tÂ
feel that bad.Â
So I just turned a blind eye.Â
I kept doing my shows and working like normal.Â
But then Lucas got drunk one night and cried,Â
asking me to marry him.Â
I said no and told him bluntly: “Marriage wouldÂ
mess with my career. I’m still young. If you wannaÂ
follow me, follow. If not, go home. Stop hanging around my place.”Â
He had nothing to say…Â
Echo’s parent–teacher conference was right beforeÂ
winter break.Â
It wasn’t really a parent–teacher conference–itÂ
was a parent–child class the kindergarten put on.Â
The night before, Echo was so excited he couldn’tÂ
sleep. He kept nuzzling into me.Â
His mouth didn’t stop smiling: “Mommy, tomorrowÂ
at kindergarten, they’re all gonna be so jealous ofÂ
me.”Â
“Jealous of what?”Â
“Jealous that I have such an amazing mom!”Â
To him, I was amazing.Â
Besides my fans, it had been so long sinceÂ
someone had praised me like that.Â
I pulled him into my arms. I couldn’t help but feel aÂ
little greedy.Â
If Echo could stay with me forever, that’d beÂ
perfect.Â
Echo nuzzled into my arms and called MommyÂ
sweetly.Â
“I saw you once, outside the kindergarten gate.”Â
I opened my mouth, surprised.Â
Echo went on: “You had a mask and a hat on, but IÂ
knew it was you.”Â
“Because you were watching Echo.”Â
“Mommy, I didn’t get it wrong, right?”Â
I held Echo tighter: “Yeah, Mommy was alwaysÂ
there.”Â
Back in the day, Echo was living with theÂ
Harringtons, so I barely got to see him.Â
It wasn’t until later, when Echo moved to LondonÂ
with Lucas and started kindergarten,Â
that I would stand in the crowd of parents pickingÂ
up their kids and look at him from far away when IÂ
didn’t have work.Â
I bought that house in London because it wasÂ
close to Echo’s kindergarten.Â
But I didn’t dare let him know.Â
I was scared too. Scared he’d think I didn’t wantÂ
him, scared he’d say, “You’re not my mom.”Â
Luckily, my kid had been raised so well.Â
Early that morning, Echo got up and got ready.Â
He stood in front of the mirror, checking himselfÂ
out for ages.Â
I don’t know who he gets that vanity from.Â
When he saw me laughing at him from behind,Â
Echo blushed, embarrassed.Â
“Mommy, can you put some lotion on me?”Â
“Huh?”Â
“Mia’s mom is coming today. I wanna look nice.”Â
Hearing that, I laughed and cried at the same time: “You like Mia that much?”Â
Echo nodded: “When the kids at kindergarten wereÂ
making fun of me, only Mia helped me. She saidÂ
she’d split her mom with me.”Â
“But I didn’t want that. I told her I have a mom. If I took someone else’s mom, you’d be sad.”Â
“Mia’s a hero. She protected me at kindergarten, so I decided I’m gonna marry her when I grow up.”Â
In the end, I put some kids‘ face cream on Echo. He looked at himself in the mirror, totally satisfied.Â
“All white and soft.”Â
I was laughing so hard.Â
I thought Lucas wouldn’t come today, but as soon as Echo and I finished getting ready, ready to goÂ
downstairs,Â
we saw his car parked at the door.Â
Echo saw it, was so happy, and held one of myÂ
hands and one of Lucas’s.Â
At the kindergarten gate, he held his head up high.Â
He told everyone: “See? I have a mom.”Â
Lucas saw that and got a little jealous.Â
“Why didn’t you say you have a dad?”Â
Echo let go of his hand: “Mommy’s a supermodel.Â
You’re just a normal guy. What’s there to bragÂ
about?”Â
Lucas laughed in disbelief. In all his life, no one had ever called him a normal guy.Â
He slowly followed behind me and Echo.Â
Echo introduced me to Mia and Mia’s mom.Â
Turns out, Mia’s mom was a fan of mine.Â
She was so happy to see me she almost jumped.Â
The parent–child class was the last class of theÂ
semester.Â
Echo had so much fun.Â
After the holiday, he stayed with me for a while.Â
Before New Year’s, Lucas took Echo back to theÂ
Harrington family home.Â
When they left, Echo was almost crying. He acted like a regular kid throwing a tantrum for once.Â
Lucas had no choice but to just carry him to theÂ
car.Â
In the car, after Echo cried enough, he got mad.Â
“Dad, it’s all your fault you’re useless. That’s whyÂ
Mommy can’t come back to the old house with usÂ
for New Year’s.”Â
Lucas was quiet for a long time: “Do you wantÂ
Mom and Dad to live together?”Â
He bowed his head and nodded softly.Â
He sighed, not sure what he was worrying about.Â
Lucas was patient enough to explain it to him.Â
“The reason Dad and Mom split up, one part is what you said–Dad was useless before, not brave enough. And the other part is, your grandparents. don’t like Mommy. Even though Dad’s useful now, they still don’t like her: If Mommy came back to the old house with us for New Year’s, she’d getÂ
hurt.”Â
Echo furrowed his little brow: “How can we make Grandpa and Grandma like Mommy?”Â
“Wanna know? I’ll tell you.”Â
So the first night they got back to the old house,Â
Echo carried his pillow and went to his grandparents‘ room.Â
He slept between them, sighing and tossing andÂ
turning.Â
The old couple asked him what was wrong.Â
Echo furrowed his little face: “Grandma, why is itÂ
that other people only have one dad, but I haveÂ
two dads?”Â
The old couple didn’t understand what he meant. They looked at each other, confused.Â
Echo sighed again.Â
“Dad and a uncle were holding hands and hugging.Â
Dad told me to call the uncle dad too.”Â
“Dad said he was gonna be with that uncleÂ
forever.”Â
As soon as he said that, the old couple were soÂ
shocked they couldn’t sleep.Â
They tossed and turned all night.Â
The next day, they had dark circles under theirÂ
eyes.Â
They stared at each other in the living room andÂ
asked Lucas: “What did Echo mean by that uncle?”Â
Lucas ate his breakfast like nothing happened:Â
“Oh, him? He’s my new boyfriend.”Â
“I’ll bring him over to meet you two for New Year’sÂ
soon.”Â
Mr. Harrington was so shocked he passed out.Â
Lucas looked at his dad who’d fainted and sighed helplessly.Â
“Dad, stop acting. You’re as healthy as a horse.”Â
Mr. Harrington was so mad he yelled: “Unfilial son!Â
Unfilial son!”Â
Lucas ignored him.Â
Mrs. Harrington was so regretful she yelled at herÂ
husband: “I told you… who told you to meddle in everything, looking down on this, looking down onÂ
that? Now look! You got an extra son for theÂ
family! Now the Harringtons are finally famous!”
