He Came Knocking with a Baby in Tow Chapter 04
I woke up, and there was Echo, staring at me withÂ
his big eyes wide open, in my arms.Â
When he saw I was awake, he immediately closedÂ
his eyes and pretended to be asleep.Â
But his eyelashes were twitching.Â
I couldn’t help but laugh and squeezed his littleÂ
cheek.Â
“I know you’re awake.”Â
He nuzzled into my arms shyly, wiggling around happily like a little worm.Â
Today I had no bookings, thank god.Â
I took Echo out to play all day in Milan.Â
Downstairs at the hotel.Â
A brand new Rolls–Royce had been parked thereÂ
for who knows how long. Leaning against theÂ
door was someone I knew better than anyone.Â
Lucas was in a black suit. When he saw usÂ
coming back, he slowly stood up and walked overÂ
to us.Â
Compared to five years ago, he had more of that top–dog aura about him now.Â
He tilted his head slightly, his sharp gazeÂ
sweeping over Echo.Â
He said flatly: “Time to go home.”Â
Echo pouted, totally unwilling.Â
“I wanna stay with Mommy! If you’re so bored, goÂ
hang out with your own mom!”Â
Lucas laughed in disbelief and looked up at me:Â
“See? It’s not that I wouldn’t come pick him up. HeÂ
won’t go back with me.”Â
I patted Echo’s shoulder and coaxed him:Â
“Tomorrow’s Monday, you have school.”Â
Echo just shook his head stubbornly, his eyes allÂ
watery, looking so pitiful.Â
Lucas looked at him like that, scoffed, and wasÂ
about to say something.Â
But Echo pulled him aside to whisper.Â
Lucas raised an eyebrow, looking like he wasn’tÂ
even listening.Â
Echo, on the other hand, had a serious little face,Â
hands on his hips, chattering away like he was scolding someone.Â
Seeing that, I relaxed a little.Â
Lucas wasn’t exactly known for his patience. IfÂ
Echo could talk to him like that, it meant father and son had a pretty good relationship.Â
“I told you, I wanna come see Mommy. You promised I could stay with Mommy for a fewÂ
days!”Â
“I’m not going back with you! If you make me go, I’m gonna tell Grandma you lied to kids, and I’m gonna make Grandpa beat you up!”Â
“Go home, don’t bother me and Mommy’s aloneÂ
time!”Â
Lucas bent down slightly: “If you can come see her, why can’t I?”Â
Echo huffed: “Mommy doesn’t want you! What are you doing here?”Â
Lucas choked, bit his lip, looked like a total brat,Â
scoffed: “You think putting on that sad faceÂ
means she cares about you?”Â
“She didn’t even want me, she’s definitely notÂ
gonna want you.”Â
Echo got so mad he yelled that he was gonna go tell on him, that he was bullying him.Â
And then Echo dragged me back into the hotel room and locked Lucas outside the door.Â
Lucas was so mad he could barely see straight.Â
Echo wouldn’t open the door no matter what, so inÂ
the end he had to text me.Â
[Can you open the door?]Â
After he locked the door, Echo ran around theÂ
room looking for somewhere to hide.Â
In the end he chose the bed, took off his shoes,Â
and covered himself completely with the blanket.Â
I looked at the little lump under the covers andÂ
couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time.Â
I opened the door anyway.Â
Lucas saw me and was actually polite for once:Â
“Can I come in?”Â
I nodded: “Sure.”Â
Actually, the first two years after we broke up,Â
Lucas never stopped helping me.Â
During that time, I buried myself in the runway.Â
I barely went to any parties or red carpets, put away that old arrogance of mine, and kept a lowÂ
profile.Â
A lot of people were whispering that I’d been dumped by my sugar daddy.Â
But Lucas’s actions told them otherwise, loud andÂ
clear.Â
That creepy photographer who tried to hit on me?Â
He got replaced the next day.Â
When I got bumped from a show, a betterÂ
opportunity would come along not long after.Â
When I did go to red carpets, those hard–to–borrowÂ
haute couture brands? They never said no, not if IÂ
asked.Â
Even my agent was still that top agent Lucas had gotten me all those years ago.Â
Nothing changed–not the treatment, not anything.Â
It was like he was telling me that if I ever wanted.Â
to turn back, he’d be right there.Â
But… there was no “but” for us.Â
I watched him have that big fancy engagementÂ
ceremony with some other rich girl.Â
Watched them walk arm in arm to all kinds ofÂ
events.Â
The media called them the perfect match.Â
Later, with that recommendation letter Mrs.Â
Harrington gave me, I won three supermodel awards in a row and made a name for myself in the fashion industry.Â
Only then did he slowly let go, letting the bird finally fly free.Â
Lucas came in, looked at the little lump under theÂ
covers on the bed, and laughed.Â
He didn’t rush to call him out.Â
Instead he asked me: “How have you been lately?”Â
I smiled and said, “Fine. You?”Â
“What about Miss Sophia?”Â
He looked up at me, the corner of his mouthÂ
tugging up in a faint smile: “Her? She’s probably on some beach somewhere, sunbathing with her little boyfriend.”Â
“Me and her… there was never anything betweenÂ
us.”Â
I gave a soft “Mm” and quickly changed theÂ
subject.Â
“Take Echo home. He has school tomorrow.”Â
As soon as I said that, Echo threw the covers off,Â
ran over barefoot, and hugged my leg.Â
“Mommy, don’t send me away, okay?”Â
I looked at his big black eyes, all watery.Â
I couldn’t bear it: “But you have school tomorrow.”Â
He didn’t say anything, just buried his head in my clothes, his little hand grabbing tight to my hem.Â
Lucas looked at him like that and finally spoke.Â
“He can skip a couple days of kindergarten. Let him stay with you.”Â
Echo looked up, his eyes red: “Mommy, Echo will be so good. I won’t bother you at work, I promise.”Â
I patted his head. My heart was actually happy.Â
Looking at the scene of mother and son being all sweet,Â
Lucas shook his head helplessly: “In a coupleÂ
days, are you even gonna remember you have aÂ
dad?”Â
Echo turned his head, thought about it for aÂ
second, then nodded anyway.
