Divorce Day Reset: My Wife Back at Seventeen Chapter 10
When Rina met me at the dessert shop, she didn’t say much. But she would constantly message me in private, reminding me to tell her right away if Liliana ever came to bother me again.
Even though we didn’t live far from each other, she never dropped by unannounced. Only once in a while, when inspiration struck, she would mail me little impromptu pieces she’d made from different materials.
I felt like my own soul was being cleansed when I looked at those sculptures full of artistic flair. On the barren) cracked soil of my heart, thin strands of spring rain slowly soaked into the earth.
All of a sudden, I felt like this power to turn decay into something almost sacred was absolutely unbelievable.
The way life was now left me uneasy at times, but pleasantly surprised at others. As long as Liliana still existed in my world, I could never truly rest easy.
The life I had here, once calm and quietly content, now had a dull, joyless streak running right through it.
Rina was very good to me, but it was still nowhere near enough to make up for the damage Liliana had done. It wouldn’t have been enough, no matter who it was.
I’d always thought that Liliana would be the cruelest, most vicious roadblock I would ever face in my life. I never imagined that after her, there would still be Maurice.
In the process of tracking Liliana down, he also managed to find out where I was living. The way he saw it, if it weren’t for me, his life wouldn’t have fallen apart. If he didn’t get revenge, he would die with resentment.
He dug into my movements and studied my daily routine. Finally, he found an opening and waited for the right moment to strike.
When I walked out of the dessert shop that day, Liliana was standing there with a bouquet of flowers, waiting for me. Rina, meanwhile, was studying the ivy climbing the dessert shop window, looking for inspiration while also staying on high alert in case Liliana pulled something.
I’d barely stepped off the small stone path when a fast black blur suddenly shot toward me. Maurice was behind the wheel of the car racing straight at us.
His face was twisted with rage, and fury churned in his chest. A sharp, piercing howl ripped from his throat.” Simon Rivero, if it weren’t for you, I would never have ended up like this! Go to hell, all of you!”
On the nearly empty street, he laid on the horn over and over, the blaring noise like a demon cackling up from the depths of hell. He barreled straight toward me, completely deranged.
A wave of dizziness washed over me amid the screams that erupted around us. It felt like someone had thrown themselves in front of me. Then, everything went pitch black,
When I finally woke up, I learned that Rina and Liliana had both risked their lives to stop Maurice’s car and save
I lay on the hospital bed, hooked up to an IV. I stared blankly at the doctor, completely at a loss.
He said, “Mr. Rivero, your injuries aren’t too serious. But the other three who were brought in with you… Only Ms. Coolidge is… Given her current condition, she’ll have to spend the rest of her life in a wheelchair.”
My gaze turned dull and unfocused. I honestly didn’t know what I was supposed to feel after hearing that. “Oh,
okay.”
After a few days in the hospital, my life resumed its usual pace. On the day I was discharged, I went to see Liliana. She lay there on the hospital bed, her eyes hollow as she stared up at the ceiling. She seemed to be lost in thought.
Maybe her mind had taken a hit too, because she looked especially weighed down and depressed. She did look a little pitiful, but people who ended up in these situations usually had done something hateful.
My voice was still a little weak when I spoke. “Liliana, regardless of what happened, you saved my life this time. I’m grateful for that. But if you’re hoping this means we’ll get back together, then you’re wrong. That’s never going to happen.”
She signaled for a nurse to help her sit up. “Of course. Now that I’m like this, how could you possibly ever want to come back?”
I shook my head. “This has nothing to do with that. Even if you were perfectly healthy, my choice would be the same. What I despise is that filthy, rotten heart of yours.”
She had her head bowed for a long time before she said, “Ultimately, it’s a fact that I betrayed and wronged you. I hope you find happiness from now on.”
