Charging My Wife by the Hour Chapter 07

The doctor whispered in my ear, “All of his numbers look good, but his memory appears to have taken a bit of a hit. He’s under the impression that his mother has passed away. He’s still fresh out of surgery, so try your best to just play along for now. We can’t risk triggering him.”

After hearing the doctor’s words, I let out a wry chuckle. I never expected that what I had said to Vivian,

that she no longer deserved to be Victor’s mother, would actually come true in a roundabout way.

I bent down and stroked Victor’s head. “Vic, once you get discharged, what do you say we move somewhere new and start fresh, just the two of us?”

I took out the visas I had prepared long ago and moved with Victor to a small town in the north. Aside

from the rent Vivian had paid to keep Elliot and his daughter company, I had also received a large sum of money from the divorce, which was more than enough for Victor and me to live comfortably for the rest

of our lives.

I bought a villa with a yard and a small car. Even though it didn’t compare to having a butler, a

housekeeper, and a chef like we did back home, there was a simple, quiet happiness in cooking our own meals every day and puttering around the garden as we pleased.

Victor’s emotional well-being had taken a noticeable turn for the better. Even though there was a

language barrier, children have a way of hitting it off and becoming fast friends right away.

Victor used to be guarded and distant around kids his own age because of Eleanor. So, as I watched him now, laughing and playing with his friends without a care in the world, I felt a massive weight finally lift

off my chest.

After we adjusted to life there for a while, I found a language school for Victor and secured a translation job for myself. The pay was meager, but earning money through my own abilities tasted a whole lot better than being a live-in son-in-law who had to beg for handouts.

However, our peaceful days didn’t last very long. One day, after urging Victor to finish his breakfast and

buckling his seatbelt, I was about to start the car to take him to school. Then, an unexpected visitor

appeared at the gate. It was Vivian.

My heart pounded like a drum, but I kept my cool on the surface. “Stay here. I’ll be right back.”

After giving those strict orders, I walked to the front of the yard. “What are you doing here?”

I had not seen her for several months. She had lost a lot of weight, and there were dark circles under her

eyes.

“Vincent, is that Vic in the car?” Vivian asked, her voice rising with excitement. “I knew it! I knew he was

alright. Let me see him. How is his recovery going?”

I hastily locked the courtyard gate. “Stay away from my son. If you don’t leave right now, I’m calling the

cops!”

“Don’t call the cops, Vincent!” Vivian reached out frantically through the gate bars, attempting to grasp onto me. “I’ve searched everywhere for you two. I know I messed up. I’ve hit rock bottom since you left, and I’ve done a lot of thinking… I am so incredibly sorry! Please give me a chance to make it up to you.”

I stepped aside to dodge her hand. “You’ve already paid the rental fee, so what is there left to make up for? If you genuinely want what’s best for us, then stay the hell away from us!”

“No… please don’t mock me, Vincent!” she pleaded, gripping the bars. “I’m your wife, and I’m Vic’s mom. I know I didn’t step up when I should have. I swear I have no feelings for Elliot.

“We merely grew up together, and he spent years pining after me. The night before our wedding, I was wasted. I thought he was you… That’s the only reason that mistake happened!

“After I gave birth to Ellie for him, he just married some random woman for Ellie’s sake. But that woman was only after his money and secretly abused Ellie! Elliot only confessed all this to me after she was

killed in a car crash.

“I’ve always felt responsible for his suffering… But I know that doesn’t justify how badly I wronged you and Vic. Please, for Vic’s sake, give me one more chance. I’m sure he doesn’t want to grow up without a

mother either!”

Unable to bear it any longer, I grabbed the fertilizer beside me, intending to throw it right in her face. Before I could do that, a crisp, clear voice rang out from behind me. “Ma’am, you look so familiar. Oh, I remember now! You’re Eleanor’s mom, right? What are you doing here?”
