Alpha Rejected the Tomboy. Now, She’s Gone. Chapter 05

The score blazed bright and burning on the

screen.

A perfect 1580, the highest SAT score in the

school’s history.

I stared at the digits, my eyes stinging sharply.

I wasn’t crying out of sorrow. All the points I’d held

back for years had finally returned to me at once.

1580? The tomboy scored a 1580?”

No way. The system must have glitched!”

This is insane. No one’s ever gotten a score this

high!”

Shouts and exclamations exploded across the

room. Every single face wore the exact same look

of utter disbelief.

Courtney stood frozen by the podium, her face

drained completely of color.

She shoved me aside, snatched the mouse, and

refreshed the page over and over again.

Yet the score never changed.

This isn’t possible! She’s always been an average

student. No one will believe she scored this high

legitimately!”

Adam looked far more stunned than anyone. He

locked his eyes on the screen, rooted to the floor

without the slightest movement.

Courtney lunged forward, grabbed me by the

collar, and screamed, “You cheated! You must’ve

cheated! Did you buy the answer key beforehand?”

I pried her fingers off my clothes one by one,

steadily.

I’m not foolish enough to ruin my own future.”

I’ll fully cooperate with any investigation. If no cheating is found, your false accusation counts as a legal offense.”

I glanced at the still roaring crowd and spoke in a

cold, clear tone.

You all know the truth.

Courtney’s mouth fell open, yet she could not utter

a single word in rebuttal.

Everyone knew the SAT offered zero loopholes for

cheating.

She knew it best of all.

Like every person in this room, she simply refused

to accept reality.

She refused to believe her socalled outstanding grades paled in comparison to mine.

Adam finally snapped out of his stupor. He

stumbled toward me, barely able to keep his

balance.

Jamie, how did you score this high? You’ve

always been average”

Or have youbeen holding back your scores this

entire time?”

His expression twisted with conflictshock,

confusion, and bitter resentment at the years of

perceived deception.

Yes. I’ve been controlling my scores all along.”

The classroom fell dead silent the second the

words left my mouth.

Every pair of eyes locked firmly on me.

I continued steadily, Starting in seventh grade, I

deliberately kept my grades ordinary. I was

terrified that excelling too far would make you pull

away from me again.”

I left entire sections blank on my statewide

graduation exams, just to guarantee we’d end up

in the same high school.”

Throughout these three years of high school, I

calculated every answer I wrote. I dared not score

too high and expose myself, nor too low and drag

you down.”

For every single exam, I meticulously kept my

score exactly ten points below yours.”

Adam’s pupils constricted sharply. His hands.

began to tremble uncontrollably.

Jamie, you”

Tears finally slipped down my cheeks.

I could’ve gotten into the Advanced Placement

program at the magnet school. It was my dream.

But I gave it all up for you.”

On my birthday, I finally worked up the courage to confess. I’d already made up my mindwhether

you accepted me or not, I’d keep holding back my

scores to attend the same college as you.”

But what did you do?”

I lifted my gaze to meet his, voice breaking faintly.

You chose Courtney. You called me disgusting.”

Adam, you could’ve chosen anyone. Why her?

Why the one person who never stopped bullying

me?”

Both Adam and Courtney froze completely

speechless.
