After the Divorce, He Begged Me Back Chapter 09
By the time Holden slammed through theÂ
doors of the maternity ward, Amber was inÂ
the throes of intense labor.Â
Seeing him march into the room, herÂ
sweat–streaked face lit up with a brief sparkÂ
of relief.Â
“Honey! You made it!” she gasped through aÂ
contraction. “I knew you wouldn’t leave meÂ
alone in this place. The baby is coming.Â
You’re about to be a father!”Â
But there wasn’t a single shred of warmth inÂ
Holden’s eyes. He strode over to the bedside,Â
reached out, and wrapped his hands violently around her throat.Â
“The night before our wedding,” he hissed, squeezing down hard. “What exactly did youÂ
tell Chloe?”Â
Amber choked, her airway instantly cut offÂ
as her face bruised into a deep purple.Â
She thrashed against the mattress, her fingers clawing frantically at his wrists, butÂ
her movements grew weaker by the second.Â
Right before she lost consciousness, Holden released his grip and threw her back againstÂ
the pillows.Â
Amber gasped violently for air, hacking and coughing as oxygen flooded her lungs.Â
Holden didn’t show an ounce of compassion, standing over her like a grim reaper.Â
“I will ask you one last time. What did youÂ
say to her?”Â
Before Amber could steady her breathing,Â
another brutal contraction ripped throughÂ
her abdomen.Â
The terror in her eyes slowly hardened into an expression of venomous, unadulteratedÂ
rage.Â
“I told her the truth!” she shrieked. “I toldÂ
her that her hysterectomy wasn’t a medical.Â
mistake!”Â
Holden’s entire frame shook with fury.Â
“How did you find out?”Â
Amber let out a high–pitched, manic laugh.Â
“Back when I was your secretary, I stoodÂ
outside your office and heard your entireÂ
phone call with the surgeon.”Â
Losing all control, Holden lunged forwardÂ
and slammed his hands around her throatÂ
once more.Â
Amber tried to fight him off, but a suddenÂ
gush of dark blood pooled onto the sheets.Â
beneath her.Â
Her water had broken, and a massiveÂ
hemorrhage had triggered full emergencyÂ
labor.Â
Staring at the spreading crimson stain, aÂ
slow, twisted smile spread across Holden’sÂ
face.Â
He pulled his hands back, muttering toÂ
himself like a lunatic.Â
“It’s all your fault… Chloe refuses to comeÂ
home because of you. I’m going to make you pay.”Â
Terrified by his madness, Amber gathered every ounce of strength left in her body and slapped the emergency call button on the wall.Â
Alarms blared down the hallway, and a team of doctors and nurses rushed to the room, only to find Holden had locked the heavyÂ
security door from the inside.Â
Amber’s desperate screams echoed through the glass for what felt like an eternity untilÂ
her voice cracked and she finally blacked outÂ
from exhaustion. Only then did Holden slideÂ
the bolt open.Â
The medical team scrambled inside to checkÂ
the monitors, but the lead obstetrician.Â
slowly lowered his head, shaking it in defeat.Â
“The infant was deprived of oxygen for too long in utero. I’m so sorry… there’s noÂ
heartbeat.”Â
Holden let out a cold, chilling chuckle. “Good. Now that the mistake is gone, ChloeÂ
will come back to me.”Â
He spun on his heel and stumbled out into the night like a zombie.Â
Within two months, Holden’s firm officiallyÂ
filed for bankruptcy, its assets liquidated toÂ
cover his immense debt.Â
Amber lost her mind completely following the loss of the child. She wandered the streets in a tattered hospital gown, grabbing strangers and sobbing the same question.Â
“Have you seen my baby boy? Where is he?”Â
Meanwhile, Holden spent every single day standing outside the EC Group headquarters like a hollow shell, staring up at the glass facade, waiting for a glimpse of me.Â
Ethan stood beside me in the executive suite, placing a comforting hand on my shoulder.Â
“I’ll have security remove him from theÂ
premises,” he murmured.Â
I shook my head, glancing down at the pathetic figure shivering on the sidewalk.Â
“If he loves standing in the cold so much, letÂ
him. I am never looking at him again.”Â
Ethan pulled me into his arms, his touchÂ
warm and grounded.Â
“Chloe, there’s something I need to showÂ
you.”Â
“What is it?” I looked up at him.Â
He pulled a bound document from his deskÂ
and slid it into my hands–it was an equityÂ
transfer agreement.Â
“I’ve transferred exactly fifty percent of theÂ
conglomerate’s shares into your name,” heÂ
said softly.Â
I froze, my jaw dropping. “Ethan… this isÂ
worth billions. I can’t take this.”Â
He let out a soft laugh, brushing a strand ofÂ
hair behind my ear.Â
“This empire was always built for you,Â
Chloe. The initials of the firm, EC… it standsÂ
for Ethan and Chloe.”Â
I gasped, covering my mouth as tears filled my eyes. He had named his lifelong dream after us before I even knew it.Â
Before I could process the shock, Ethan sankÂ
down onto one knee and produced a velvet box containing a flawless, brilliant–cutÂ
diamond ring.Â
“Chloe, will you marry me and let me protect. you for the rest of our days?”Â
My head nodded almost involuntarily as a sob of pure joy escaped my lips. He leaped up, laughing as he scooped me into his arms and spun me around the office.Â
One month later, an EC Group security guard stepped out of the lobby and walked over to the ragged man huddled by the concreteÂ
steps.Â
“Hey, wake up, buddy,” the guard muttered, nudging him with a boot.Â
Holden’s bloodshot, glassy eyes drifted upÂ
toward the guard’s face.Â
The guard slapped a heavy, cream–colored card against his chest with absolute disgust.Â
“The office is closed tomorrow because the entire staff is attending the CEO’s wedding. The boss told me to make sure you got this.”Â
Holden took the card with trembling fingers, while the guard turned back toward the glass doors, shaking his head.Â
“No clue what the boss is thinking, giving a formal invite to a homeless bum.”Â
Holden flipped the card open. Resting inside was a gorgeous, high–gloss wedding portraitÂ
of Chloe and Ethan, smiling radiantly in eachÂ
other’s embrace.Â
A choked sob caught in his throat. He lookedÂ
up at the towering skyscrapers one last time, before dragging his broken feet down the avenue, disappearing into the fog.Â
On the day of our wedding, Holden never showed his face. Instead, a small packageÂ
was delivered to my dressing room.Â
Inside lay the diamond wedding band I had left on the desk six months ago. I didn’t say a word: I walked out to the pavilion and tossedÂ
it directly into the deep waters of the lake.Â
Turning back, I walked down the aisle, reached out my hands to Ethan as he smiledÂ
up at me, and whispered the words thatÂ
cemented my new life.Â
“I do.”Â
