After My Boyfriend and Best Friend Betrayed Me, Regret Haunted Them Nightly Chapter 06
My new position was at the city’s largest top–tierÂ
hospital, in a bright, spacious office.Â
Dr. Nelson, the department head and an oldÂ
acquaintance of Dr. Schmidt, slapped my shoulderÂ
with a laugh on my first day.Â
“Dr. Schmidt brags about you on video callsÂ
constantly, saying you’re the most hardworkingÂ
student he’s ever had. Welcome back.”Â
I smiled, pinned my badge onto my white coat,Â
and checked myself in the locker room mirror.Â
I was noticeably thinner than three years ago, butÂ
my eyes remained clear and sharp.Â
Rehab in Germany had restored ninety percent ofÂ
my right arm’s function. Although prolonged knifeÂ
work brought numbness, it was enough for mostÂ
surgeries.Â
On my third day, a knock sounded at my door.Â
Preston stood outside, looking completely lost.Â
“Julissa… you really are here.”Â
Noticing the personnel passing by in the hallway, IÂ
frowned and invited him inside.Â
He took a seat across from me, his expressionÂ
complex.Â
“Julissa, you left so fast in the ER the other day. IÂ
have so much I need to say.”Â
I looked up at him calmly, letting out a scoff. “I’mÂ
not interested.”Â
His face went pale for a split second, but heÂ
pressed on anyway.Â
“That charm… Paige did make it. At first, we wereÂ
just…Â
“I can’t make excuses. Wrong is wrong, and I knowÂ
how unfair it was to you. But these past threeÂ
years, not a single second went by without regret.”Â
He gave a bitter laugh and looked down. As ifÂ
afraid I’d cut him off, he let it all spill out in oneÂ
breath.Â
“My life has been a mess these past three years.Â
Paige… she’s so insecure. She checks my phoneÂ
every day, asking about every text fromÂ
colleagues. If I speak two extra words to a femaleÂ
coworker at work, she refuses to eat.”Â
“She quit her job and made me her entire world. IÂ
felt suffocated–like even breathing the wrong wayÂ
was a crime.”Â
“I walked on eggshells every single day, terrifiedÂ
that one wrong word would set her off. Back whenÂ
you and I stood side by side at the operating table,Â
a single glance was all we needed.”Â
“But with her, it was constant explaining, constantÂ
reassuring, constant wiping away tears. One nightÂ
I woke up and, for a split second, I thought youÂ
were still there beside me. I reached out–and thenÂ
remembered you were gone.”Â
I ignored him, keeping my head down and writing. up the progress notes. Only when he got to thatÂ
part did I glance up.Â
“So what? You came here to unload on me? WantÂ
me to feel sorry for you? What does any of thatÂ
have to do with me?”Â
Preston’s face shifted. A golden boy like him hadÂ
never been in such a pathetic state. He gritted hisÂ
teeth, refusing to leave. “Why didn’t I hold onto youÂ
on that rooftop that evening?”Â
I set down my pen, letting out a mocking laugh.Â
“You like being needed. You like being dependedÂ
on, having someone whose whole world revolvesÂ
around you. I couldn’t give you that, so I wasn’tÂ
good enough. Once Paige actually gave you everything, you felt suffocated.”Â
“Preston, you can’t have it both ways.”Â
I stood up and opened the office door wide.Â
“Leave.”Â
After my night shift three days later, I bumped intoÂ
Paige in the parking lot.Â
She stood by my car, her eyes swollen, looking like an abandoned stray.Â
“Julissa…” She sobbed uncontrollably, her words. broken and staggered.Â
She said these three years had been exhausting.Â
She said she dreamed endlessly about my injured right arm.Â
She said she only learned what constant anxiety meant after being with Preston.Â
She said she didn’t feel like herself anymore.Â
She said she truly missed me.Â
Finally, she raised her face, completely drenchedÂ
in tears.Â
“I’m not asking for your forgiveness. I just wantÂ
you to know you’re the best friend I’ve ever had. I’mÂ
sorry.”Â
The wind blew her hair into a mess. She was still the same, crying just like a child.Â
A memory came back to me–years ago, when I’d shut myself in my room and cried, it was Paige who found me, smiling as she took my hand.Â
She had said, “Crying ruins your face, Julissa. I’llÂ
protect you from now on.”Â
Yet from that day forward, I never cried in front ofÂ
anyone again.Â
I took it upon myself to protect Paige.Â
I thought of the caramel candy.Â
I thought of her shuffling into the kitchen to cookÂ
me pasta.Â
I thought of every earnest word she’d said toÂ
Preston, and all the small moments we’d sharedÂ
over the years.Â
In the end, I let out a quiet sigh and placed a tissue in her palm.Â
“Paige, life goes on with or without him. You’ll get through this–but only if you choose to.”
