She was Ethan’s assistant. We had each other’s contact info. But we’d never spoken.
I didn’t know why she wanted to meet. I was nervous.
Was it about Ethan?
Before I could say anything, she slid a pretty box across the table.
Inside was an expensive silk scarf.
She smiled apologetically. “Emily, I’m about to move to our overseas branch. I’ve always wanted to
give you something to thank you, but I never had the right moment.”
“If I don’t do it now, I don’t know when I’ll get another chance.”
That was a lot to take in. I was quiet for a long time.
First, why was she leaving the country?
Second, why was she giving me a gift?
I didn’t get it. So I asked her directly.
Julia was polished and put together. She looked sharp and confident.
She looked at me with warm, clear eyes. “Three years ago, I was hired as Mr. Harrington’s
assistant. I’ve always been grateful he gave me a chance.”
“My resume wasn’t special compared to the other candidates. But he said, ‘Thank my wife. She’s the one who picked you.””
Then I remembered.
Ethan had shown me two assistant candidates’ profiles. He asked for my opinion.
I realized he was asking if I would be okay with a female assistant.
I didn’t hesitate. I picked Julia.
Ethan seemed surprised. He asked why.
I said, “Because she’s better than the other one. She shouldn’t lose the opportunity.”
After my family went bankrupt, I had to work to pay off debts.
I worked myself to the bone, facing more contempt than I can count, drinking far too much, and fending off countless unwanted advances.
Even when I became the top salesperson, people still said I’d only gotten there because of my

When Ethan heard my story, he pulled me into his arms.
He said that as long as she worked for him, she would be treated fairly, and he kept his promise.
