A Debt Repaid In Blood, A Marriage Paid In Silence Chapter 05
My head spun, like a string inside me had snapped for good.Â
Lila still had the nerve to pretend to apologize.Â
“I’m so sorry, Wren! I had a sudden heart attack,Â
and I accidentally knocked the urn over…”Â
I stared at her in a daze. There wasn’t an ounce ofÂ
regret in her eyes–only open mockery.Â
The others finally realized something was wrong.Â
They stammered, “This really looks like ashes…Â
there are even bone fragments…”Â
Julian’s face turned deathly pale. He looked up atÂ
- me.Â
But the next second, I lunged at Lila and tackledÂ
her, sending both of us rolling down the stairs..Â
“AH!”Â
Lila landed on the floor, her face white as a sheetÂ
as she clutched her stomach.Â
“It hurts! My baby!”Â
In an instant, everyone rushed to her side.Â
I clutched my bleeding forehead and crawled backÂ
up the stairs, gathering my mother’s ashes piece. by piece into my hands.Â
Lila’s best friend wasn’t ready to give up. SheÂ
charged at me in a rage, grabbed my collar, and started slapping me hard.Â
“You bitch! If Lila loses her baby, I’ll kill you!”Â
Her shoe slammed down on the ashes, grinding them into the floor.Â
It felt like someone was squeezing my throat shut, cutting off my air.Â
I grabbed her and yanked her off me, my fists. flying in blind rage.Â
“AH! HELP! WREN HALE’S TRYING TO KILL ME!Â
HELP!”Â
The woman’s bloodcurdling screams echoed through the villa, all her earlier arrogance gone.Â
But I was like a rabid animal, my vision red withÂ
rage.Â
I didn’t stop until her face was covered in blood,Â
and someone finally pulled me off her.Â
Julian’s calm facade was gone. His voice shookÂ
as he held me tight.Â
“Calm down, Wren. Do you want to go to jail forÂ
murder?!”Â
But I couldn’t hear him. I couldn’t hear anything. AllÂ
I saw was my mother’s ashes, scattered all overÂ
the floor.Â
She’d suffered so much at my father’s hands whenÂ
she was alive. And now she was being dishonoredÂ
in death.Â
I wished I had a knife, so I could kill them all.Â
I opened my mouth and sank my teeth intoÂ
Julian’s hand as hard as I could.Â
Blood spurted out instantly, tearing through his skin and flesh.Â
Julian’s face contorted in pain, his veins poppingÂ
out on his forehead.Â
He let go of me in shock, clutching his bleedingÂ
wound.Â
“Wren Hale, you’re truly insane. I–AH!”Â
I grabbed a glass and smashed it over his head.Â
He crumpled to the floor, unconscious.Â
With the people who’d tormented me finally gone, I picked up a new urn, filled it with my mother’s ashes, and stumbled out of that disgusting villa.Â
Julian only blacked out for a few minutes. When he woke up, his body was shaking–not from fear, but from the realization that something had slipped out of his control.Â
The house was empty. Minutes later, someone found him and rushed him to the hospital.Â
After his wound was stitched up, Julian heard shouting from outside his room.Â
Lila was in a hospital gown, her face twisted with anger and despair.Â
When she saw Julian, she threw herself into hisÂ
arms.Â
“Julian! We lost our baby! Call the police right now!Â
Lock that crazy woman up for good!”Â
She pulled out her phone, but before she couldÂ
dial, Julian snatched it from her hand.Â
His voice was soft, laced with exhaustion, but itÂ
cut through Lila’s sobs loud and clear.Â
He said, “Let it go.”Â
Lila froze, like a knife had been driven through herÂ
skull.Â
She stared at him in shock, her lips trembling.Â
“What did you say, Julian? She killed our baby!Â
How can you take her side over mine?!”Â
Lila was consumed by hatred. She’d thought thisÂ
baby would be her ticket to becoming the newÂ
Mrs. Hartford.Â
But the baby was gone, and the father didn’t careÂ
at all.Â
She balled her fists and beat at Julian’s chest,Â
tears pouring down her face.Â
Julian’s face was completely blank. He grabbedÂ
her wrist and snapped,Â
“If you hadn’t purposely knocked over the urn, weÂ
never would’ve lost the baby! I’m not blaming youÂ
for it, and that’s mercy enough. How dare yourÂ
accuse me?”Â
With that, he shoved her away hard and walkedÂ
out the door.Â
Lila’s head spun. She refused to accept it, chasingÂ
after him and yelling,Â
“Did that bitch tell you I did it on purpose?! How can you believe her lies? She’s framing me! AndÂ
who even knows what was in that urn? It could’veÂ
been lime, sand, dirt-”Â
“ENOUGH!”Â
Julian stopped in his tracks and spun around, shouting at her.Â
The housekeeper had already told him everything. Wren’s mother had died a year ago.Â
At the time, he’d been too busy with a foreign. model to notice anything was wrong.Â
Julian stared at Lila coldly and let out a scoff.Â
Did she really think he’d marry someone like her?Â
“I spoiled you because you were obedient. But if you’re going to act like this, I wouldn’t even spare you a second glance.”Â
With that, he pushed the stunned Lila aside and walked away.
