He Was Her Ex-Brother-In-Law Chapter 05
We were about to go further, but the pounding downstairs suddenly stopped.Â
Celeste’s screaming turned to sobbing.Â
“Asher, open this door! I swear I’ll crack myÂ
skull open on your doorstep!”Â
I hooked my arms around Asher’s neck andÂ
pulled him down.Â
“Ignore her.”Â
He dipped his head and pressed his lips to my collarbone. The heat of his breath made me goÂ
liquid.Â
Then my phone screen lit up.Â
My mother calling.Â
I answered on instinct. Her shrieking hit me.Â
immediately. “Sienna! Are you at AsherÂ
Blackwood’s house right now?”Â
“You get out here right now! There areÂ
reporters at the door. Have you lost your mind?Â
Humiliating your sister like this?”Â
I almost laughed out loud.Â
“Mom.Â
Veronica ran off three years ago. What dignityÂ
does she have?”Â
“Shut your mouth. Your sister’s right here. She flew back. She’s standing next to me.”Â
“You ruin her name, and I’m done with you.Â
For good.”Â
Then my sister Veronica Sinclair’sÂ
voice came through the line, dripping with theÂ
same condescending tone as always.Â
“Sienna. I know you’ve been competing withÂ
me my whole life. But Asher is my ex–husband.Â
You can’t even leave your former brother–in–lawÂ
alone?”Â
I shook my head, disgusted.Â
“Veronica. When you ran off with thatÂ
trust–fund playboy, did you happen to rememberÂ
Asher was your husband then?”Â
“Now that the guy dumped you, you’re back toÂ
pick through the trash?”Â
Three seconds of silence.Â
Then my mother’s hysterical cursing explodedÂ
from the speaker.Â
Asher snatched the phone from my hand andÂ
hung up.Â
He stared at me, his eyes bloodshot. “Sienna. It’s not too late to walk away.”Â
I reached up and cradled his face in my hands. “I already told you. I won’t regret this.”Â
Downstairs, more and more engines rumbledÂ
- up. The driveway was clogged.Â
Asher stood and pulled me to the window.Â
He drew the curtain back an inch. A black seaÂ
of heads filled the driveway below.Â
that?”Â
“You seeÂ
His voice was hoarse.Â
“The second youÂ
stay with me, every outlet in the country will know. The CEO of Blackwood Industries involved withÂ
his ex’s sister.”Â
“Your career. Your reputation. Gone.”Â
I turned to look at him. “What about you?Â
Are you scared?”Â
He stared at me.Â
“Me? I’m not scared forÂ
- me. I’m scared for you.”Â
I rose up on my toes and kissed his mouth.Â
“I’m not scared.”Â
His arm wrapped around my waist, and heÂ
deepened the kiss.Â
The camera flashes went wild below.Â
Asher broke away and pulled me toward theÂ
stairs.Â
“What are you doing?”Â
I grabbed his arm.Â
“They want a show.Â
Let’s give them one.”Â
The moment he opened the door, the flashesÂ
nearly blinded me.Â
Celeste stood at the front of the crowd, tearsÂ
still on her face.Â
She saw Asher holding my hand, and herÂ
expression contorted into something hideous.Â
“Asher! How could you…”Â
He didn’t even look at her. He spoke directly toÂ
every reporter.Â
“Sienna Sinclair. My fiancée.”Â
“Three years ago, I pursued her. She turnedÂ
me down. Today she said yes. That’s the story.Â
Anyone want to challenge it?”Â
Silence swallowed the crowd.Â
Veronica burst out of the group and jabbedÂ
her finger in my face.Â
“Sienna! You seducedÂ
my ex! Have you no shame?”Â
I looked at her. “You cheated, Veronica.Â
Vanished for three years with some European.Â
And now you want to claim him as your ex?”Â
Her face went pale.Â
My mother lunged forward and raised herÂ
hand to slap me.Â
Asher caught her wrist.Â
“Hitting someoneÂ
in front of the press. Not a good look.”Â
My mother shook with fury. “AsherÂ
Blackwood! You manipulated my daughter! I’ll sueÂ
you!”Â
Asher let out a cold laugh.Â
“Sienna is twenty–five years old. An adult.Â
Who she chooses to be with is her decision.”Â
The cameras exploded again.Â
In the back of the crowd, Celeste’s eyesÂ
gleamed with malice.Â
She pulled out her phone and sent aÂ
message.
